deadlifts

So about 3 weeks ago I injured my lower back doing straight leg deadlifts on a workout dvd I have using 2 10lb weights. Nothing too serious, but my doctor told me to take it easy for awhile, no running or high impact exercise.....and to never do that exercise again. He said that was the worst exercise for your back and even if you are doing it correctly (which I believe I was) it is still dangerous. So my question is does anyone know any alternate exercises that work the same muscles that I could replace the deadlifts with while doing my dvds? Thanks!

No expert but a friend of mine of MFP just hurt herself doing Deadlifts...so I figured I'd google the alternatives and this is what I found on live strong.com

    Alternative Back Exercises

Dead lifts can strengthen the back the way few exercises can, but they also come with their risks. You may want to avoid these risks altogether by using different back exercises while you work out. Some other back exercises include barbell bent over rows, pulls-ups and chin-ups, barbell shrugs, one arm dumbbell rows, and dumbbell reverse flyers.

I think it is a wonderful exercise if done correctly, it has basically gotten rid of all of the cellulite on my legs by building up my hamstrings. However, I hardly ever do the stiff legged variety, I do regular (bending) deadlifts.

I have 2 herniated discs and cannot do deadlifts either. In my opinion, no one exercise can do what a deadlift does, but my recommendations would be squats, lunges and bird dogs.... if you were at a gym you could do seated rows too.

    Examples of a bird dog:

There is also an exercise call a glute hamstring raise... you could YouTube it to see what it is and if you have the right set up for it at home.

You don't have to do stiff-legged deads. Just do regular ones. And unfortunately there really isn't an equal exercise to doing deads. It works more muscles than you think.

The two biggest exercises that not only target your entire core as well as the back/legs are Squats and Deadlifts, but they also target your central nervous system as well.
