My doctor told me I should eat or drink something with both carbs and protein right before a workout, and something with protein immediately after a workout. The carbs give you the instant energy you need for the exertion, but the protein is also necessary to provide long-lasting energy and keep your metabolism going at that higher rate for a longer period of time (thus burning more fat).0
