I'm wanting to run on the treadmill today, but if I run on anything other than the elliptical, my shins start hurting(pretty badly). Is there anything I can do to prevent this? I have been running on the elliptical for about two months now and I haven't really seen any results. I know actual running will help me more. Running outside does the same thing with my shins. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

Bad fit on shoes can cause leg pain. Also doing too much too fast will kill the legs/shins. The elliptical is totally different in running. You'll probably have to do intervals to built up.

One thing I just tried last night that helps a lot....try to run landing on the ball of your foot, rather than your heels(you can let your heels come down, but let the initial impact be on the ball of the foot). It's almost more of a trot and you use more calf muscles but it really does cushion the impact compared to landing on your heel and letting that impact go all the way up your leg. Try it out!
  • I was given some great advice - if you have pain in your shins, massage them (hard) after running.

it could be your shoes like people are saying, or i find that if i do a fair amount of stretching before i start running it helps a lot. also start your run off slow, like walking at first and then up the pace- basically don't just jump into it

You're getting (or have got) shin splints, and need to rest them from running for a while. Here's the advise I got - carry on when it hurts and you'll get a fracture, you can't run through the pain as I tried to. You must warm up and cool down, and apparently lots of people with shorter calf muscles get them, or flat feet. Exercises when you warm up and cool down which lengthen the calfs will help, and you'll probably need some expert advise on footwear too. Mine fully recovered in my right leg, but never did on my left as I ignored the advice and carried on running - I found anything that involved pointing my toes made it worse, like the stepper as well.

I can now treadmill run (when I'm fit!!) but I can't road run, running on hard surfaces is out for me. My physio said if you really can't stay away to rest up for a while, put the treadmill on a good steep incline, and walk - calorie burn is about the same. Hope that helps - but would definitely recommend a physio session as they can do deep heat treatment, ultrasound and help you to retrain your running style if needs be. Loads of luck x

It takes time to get used to running. When I first started walking it was a nice pace then I upped it to a fast walk then a speed walk then eventually with time I could jog. I didn't get shin splints at all. I do have good shoes too

I used to have the same problem. I was getting into running about a year ago and fell off of the wagon because of the pain. This time, though, I began exercising doing various cardio workouts like 30 Day Shred and Cardio Blast. Once I had done these for a few months, I started running again using C25K and I haven't had any pain. It helped me to build up my muscles first, before attempting running again. The C25K program also kept me from doing too much, too soon. Hope that helps!

    Thanks for the advice everyone!!

I know I git shin splints from playing volleyball years ago. I got some shoes around Christmas from a place that specialized in that thing. I am going to get some new ones soon and maybe get some inserts. I will walk today and maybe try and run for short times, slowly. Thanks again for the advice. Good luck to all of you your journey!!

That's the problem with the elliptical, it doesn't really train your body to do anything except work on the elliptical. Because it's such an odd motion and low impact workout, you really don't build up any kind of physical muscle and joint endurance for actual running.
