Hey guys! can everyone add to this list on refined sugars ? My naturopath says I can't have refined sugars for the next two weeks (while we sort out some things with my 20 lb weight gain in 3 months of quitting smoking) and though I've heard of a refined sugar, I'm not sure what they are

look at the ingredients. anything that says "sugar" has a refined sugar in it. Most breads are refined flour...which is just as bad. You may want to stay away from white bread especially, but try using "whole grain" breads from a health food store.
Pancakes, waffles, pasta, cake, candy, crackers....the list goes on and on

Here is the definition of refined sugar to help you determine what to have:

    What Are They?

Refined sugars are sugars that undergo a process known as sugar refining. During this process, the raw sugars are refined, or enhanced. The sucrose is extracted while other unwanted materials are discarded. Although refined sugars are believed by many to be the basic table sugar that we may add to coffee or tea, there are actually a number of different types.

    Granulated Sugar

Granulated sugar is the most common of the refined sugars. It is consumed by many on a regular basis and is found in most homes. Granulated sugar is often used to sweeten beverages, such as coffee and tea. This type of refined sugar is also used in baking and cooking.
    Sanding Sugar

Sanding sugar is another type of refined sugar. It is slightly more coarse than granulated sugar, making it ideal for cookie decoration. It has the ability to add texture to a dessert. Sanding sugar is also used with certain cold desserts to sweeten without sacrificing texture.
    Super-Refined Sugars

Super-refined sugars are often used in commercial food products. Some of these products include sodas and other sugary beverages. They are also commonly used in pie meringues.
    Powdered Sugar

Powdered sugar, or confectioner's sugar, is the last type of refined sugar. It has a much smoother texture than the other types of refined sugars. It is commonly used in icings and similar dessert toppings because it mixes easily and creates a smooth product.

    Health Considerations

Refined sugars are classified by some as poisons to the body. They provide only empty calories lacking in nutrients and minerals. In addition, they can drain the body of nutrients because of their demanding digestion requirements. That being said, refined sugars should be limited. Moderation is key when it comes to anything potentially dangerous to the body.

Not sure what qualifies as a refined sugar (vs non-refined?) but sugar hides on ingredient lists under lots of names.

This list is from Food Rules by Michael Pollan: Sugar, barley malt, beet sugar, brown rice syrup, cane juice, corn sweetener, dextrin, dextrose, fructo-oligosaccharides, fruit juice concentrate, glucose, sucrose, invert sugar, polydextrose, turbinado sugar. (Pollan says there are more than forty types of sugar used in processed foods.)

And of course corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, honey, brown sugar.

I dont know if milk is a refined sugar but yes you can cut refined sugar out of your diet. Eating only fresh or cooked at home fruits & veggies and proteins with seasonings you know are refined sugar free.
