Drinking Green Tea burns calories!

Who knew that drinking tea burns calories? That's right. Two to three cups of green tea per day can kick up your metabolism by 80 calories per day. It may not sound like a lot, but when you're trying to lose weight, every calorie counts. Besides that, green tea contains other healthy compounds that provide all sorts of healthy benefits, including slowing the aging process.
As for the metabolism part, there is a plant chemical found mostly in green teas called EGCG (ok if you really have to know, it stands for epicgallocatechin gallate). Studies have shown that consuming 300mg of EGCG a day can promote a mild metabolism boosting benefit.
But before you rush out to load up on bottles of green tea drinks from the market, check the labels carefully. Many are sweetened (adding lots of calories or artificial sweetener). In fact, I saw one bottled "green tea" drink in the market that touted its calorie-burning benefits, even though it contained only 55 mg of EGCG per 16 ounce bottle. That means you'd have to drink six of those 16-ounce bottles in one day to have the same benefit from three cups of brewed green tea. (plus those six bottles would cost an awful lot more than 3 green tea bags!).
Don't worry too much about getting the jitters from drinking green tea. Though it does contain caffeine (50 mg vs 137mg found in a cup of coffee), the caffeine in green tea is surrounded by plant chemicals (called tannic acid compounds). They slow the release of green tea's caffeine into the bloodstream, thus resulting in fewer feelings of agitation or jitters which many people experience from drinking coffee. Bottoms up!

I wubs Green Tea
Do you like Mangos   :smokin:0 -
Yes I do. I love the mangos from my country. They are plump and sweet and make my summers so worth it0
-
Hmm, I didn't know that! I like green tea but have not been drinking it because ideally I am trying to avoid caffeine.
This might change my mind though!
I love herbal teas in general. It is a great way to trick myself into drinking water!0 -

Not sure how I guessed that one :glasses:  LOL...I like em too :drinker: Good stuff :bigsmile:0 -
I haven't been drinking herbal tea...I've been drinking the regular stuff. Must go buy some more green though.. we ran out:sad:
Edit: the peaches and field tomatoes make my summer worth it.0 -
I couldn't get in enough actual tea so I now take a green tea supplement. It's a one time a day thing and much better than trying to get in 3 cups or more of green tea. kim0

Wonder how much is in the Diet Lipton's Green Tea I drink? I love the stuff.0

I green tea! I think my favorite/staple tea is the Republic of Tea's Honey Ginseng Daily Green Tea. I drink it instead of coffee. The pink grapefruit green tea of theirs is good, too! The only problem is I have trouble drinking it in the summer, since it is hot out and I don't really want a hot beverage!0

I don't like the caffeine either but I heard something I am checking into. I heard that if you take a green tea bag and steep it in hot water for one minute. Dump that down the drain, and steep the bag again for 2 minutes in fresh hotwater, it takes out the caffeine. Might be worth looking into as Green tea has a lot of good things about it, I hear:) denise:)Hmm, I didn't know that! I drink huge mugs of green tea all day, and it keeps me full, and helps to get my water in!
I just fill a large mug in the morning, with one tea bag, and then refill the same mug all day. One trick is to let it cool down to room temperature, and then I can just chug it! I must drink 2litres of water this way, and get some of the benefits from the green tea too!

Mmmmm..... make iced green tea in the summer! I steep it with orange slices, then cool it, and it is delish!

I'm very high energy so decaf for me! I might in fact go make a cup right now before I crawl back under the warm covers!
Saw some good ice tea ideas here to save for Summer....I'll have to save this thread and read when I'm a bit more alert:blushing: :drinker:
Thanks everyone for sharing and for the link! I'll try and check that out tomorrow if I can0 -

I love it! And I figure that as it gets more watered down, the caffeine is less (which should be the progression through out the day as we near bedtime) and my water intake remains high!

I've always been a weak tea drinker....mine always looks more like watered down apple juice in the Summer but I like it that way as Iced tea..... I enjoy it the further in the day I use the bag:laugh:0
