I'm a bit embarrassed but I was walking around the organic bulk section/tubs in my local supermarket and half the stuff was foreign to me. What are all those items that are sold in the bins used for ? I know the
basics such as lentils, flour, nuts, trail mix, pretzels etc.

But, I mean I saw many other things like soy powders, quinoa, chocolate nuggets etc. Who uses all those things? Can my good mfp friends tell me what they purchase from the bulk section and what is considered healthy there? I am interested to know..

I usually buy cousous from the bulk bins....cheaper.....I also buy brown rice.

Just remember because it's organic, doesn't mean low in calories.

I buy the following in bulk:

whole wheat flour (bread, all purpose, and pastry)
brown sugar (I don't use white - I like brown better)
rolled oats (for oatmeal, granola, etc.)
    cereal (cheaper than boxed)
dried cranberries (I eat a lot of these, lol)
split peas (for making split pea soup in the crock pot - super easy!)
    chocolate chips
    flax seed
Dog biscuts (for the dog, not me! Only a few cents per pound!)
  • Steel cut oats are so much less from the bulk section. I also buy oat bran for muffins. Good pack of fiber! Flaxseed is also much cheaper from the bulk section.

I have never seen bulk bins at the supermarket. Are they in the places like Whole Foods?

Yes, Whole Foods. Also, I get a lot of stuff from WinCo - they have a fabulous bulk selection with stuff like spices, pasta, honey, peanut butter, granola, dog food, and all kinds of stuff. Some is organic and some aren't.

Jeannie, not all stores have a bulk section. We don't in any of our stores here in town. Where I grew up, one store had them, and I remember my mom would always buy the blueberry muffin mix from them. Of course, it would only be muffin mix when I was done picking out the blueberry balls. I'd get my hide tanned for that!
