Breathing correctly

I understand that the best way to breathe during exercise is in through the nose, out through the mouth (although in yoga we're in through the nose and out through the nose). I, however, am really struggling to force myself to breathe properly. I find that when my heart rate is up and I'm searching for air, I'm wanting to gulp it in through my mouth. Now, if I slow down and think it through, I can do the nose thing, but it does not come naturally. This morning on the spin bike I was really trying to think about it and make it happen, and I found that I was slowing my ride to focus on the breath.
That said, does anyone have any tips to help me train myself so that becomes my natural breath, even when I'm doing intense (for me) cardio?
Thanks!
