So, I am planning on registering for a 5k. I found one in my area that is in February (think that is a good amount of time) and the entry fee is $24. I am actually excited and this will motivate me to get moving every day... However, I am fully aware of the nay sayers. There is one in particular, and when I mention losing weight, or exercise... I am met with doubt. This person also said to me on the way to lunch after my college graduation ceremony..So, you did that for 2 yrs and you don't have a job doing what you're in school for and you're GOING BACK to school? (I got my A.S. in accounting and am going on for my B.S. and then for my M.B.A.) He takes the wind out of my sails...and probably doesn't even know.
The reason this person has such an effect on me is bc he is my father. And yes, at 41 I am still trying to earn his approval.

Anyone else have big goals and know you accomplish them, but tend not to share your plans for fear people will try to push you down? I am going to work my butt off (literally) to do this 5k but I am not sharing with him. lol.

Don't mention it to anyone. :) There will always be people that only say negative things. I like to think those people are jealous. I would say start your program but don't tell your father. Or anyone who might tell him. Wait until he notices. Unless he's like my dad and he will never notice!

Do this for yourself and your son. No one else. You need to learn to like yourself without the approval of others. Easier said than done, I know. I struggle with this all the time.

Good luck!! I love running. Be careful, it's addicting.

You can totally do this. You have lots of time to train and get ready.

As for dealing with your father; been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. The only advice I can give you is use his bad attitude and lack of support as even more motivation to reach your goals. Then when you cross the finish line you can tell him to shove it (even if only in your mind). I would encourage you to tell a couple people you think will be supportive of your goal. It is great to get support from online friends, but having people in your real life is really beneficial as well.

Best wishes, and always remember you can do this.

You can do it! I started running last week and was amazed that my second attempt at running 5k, I did it! You'll be surprised at what your body can do when you push it. Good luck! And yes, I have that negative person too and its someone close to me as well. I just try to block those negative comments and do what I feel is best for me.

Have you been running at all yet? I started last year at the age of 42 on August 23rd and ran my first 5k in October.

The only ones who knew I was doing this were my husband and kids. Then I tooted my horn loudly after I ran that first 5k!

Also, when I lost 50 pounds in 2003/4, only the people who saw me all the time knew. My family is all out of state. I didn't tell any of them. Imagine the looks on their faces when they saw me after losing weight, priceless!

Oh and for what it is worth, I used the Couch to 5k program. I highly recommend it. I couldn't even run a block when I started it.

C25K is a great way to accomplish this goal. I ran my first 5K on July 12th. 38:24....then started using c25K and now I'm doing the 5K while training in 31:00. Its a great program and will help you reach your goals. Remember they are your goals! Keep up the good work!

You all are the greatest!!! Thank you for the support... I love how we all can all cone together and lift each other up!!!!!

I tried C25k and couldn't get past the first week... found a less aggressive approach ( a book called Run Your Butt Off) and am moving into my second week tomorrow. I am sooo excited and know that if I can go back to school at 39, I can start running at 41. And I am doing EVERYTHING for my boy. He deserves a mommy who can run around with him and a mommy who can give him everything he needs.

Thank you all again. I told one person (other then all of you) because she always has my back, no matter what I am doing. :-)
