When I opened my browser this morning.... this was one of the top story links on yahoo news:

http://shine.yahoo.com/event/green/how-much-protein-do-you-really-need-2523319/

I'm not so sure I agree! What do you all think?

The article doesn't define "need". We don't "need" much in the form of carbs either..... or fat for that matter.

The ideal amount of protein one should consume is determined by individual differences along with what your individual goals are.

I do agree that a lot of people probably eat too large of a portion of protein at their meal. Portion size, in general, seems to be a reason a lot of people overeat.

I also like how it shows the variety in proteins...how some sources include a lot of fat.

I don't know if the "average" person eats too much protein or simply doesn't have enough variety in their protein sources. Something to think about.

I think the numbers given in the article (65 g for men and 55 g for women) are actually higher than what's recommended by the CDC. (http://www.cdc.gov/nutrition/everyone/basics/protein.html#How much protein).

Go to just about any medical site and they will say that most Americans consume more protein than they need.

I agree with it. 15% of your daily calories from protein is the normal amount people need. Because I have kidney stones, I am supposed to consume less than 10%.

i agree 100% with this whole article.
people do tend to eat way more protein than their bodies actually need.
