I feel like crap today. I think I need a break from working out so much. I work out atleast twice a day for about an hour or or two (each workout). I do cardio in the daytime and weights in the evening. I just feel weird not exercising but my body actually telling me to stop, I can feel it. How long do you take a break for? Also, some info about me. I am 30yrs old and this question is for more the older generation. I wasnt very active in my life for several years and I have lost 41 lbs in three months but I am not recovering like I use to. I do take Vitamins and eat healthy. I stretch before every exercise and warm up. How long should I take a break for?

You need to just see how you feel. if you feel more rested tomorrow, then workout, if not, leave it another day. maybe try cutting back and just doing either carido or weights for a few days?
  • My fella gets Mens Helath & Mens Fitness Magazines, and all the articles recommend taking 1 rest day a week. Particularly important if you're doing heavy weights that you rest the muscles the day after - so alternate uppper/lower body workouts so they're not constantly being overworked day after day as they will fatigue.

I recommend two days off from exercise a week and take a week off and every 8-12 weeks depending on how you feel. Rest is a good thing and much needed.

Hmmm..... Do you know the answer to this question and just don't want to trust your body enough to listen? What happens if you break your routine and everything you've accomplished goes away? Trust your body.

You also sound as if you revel in extremes - you have to push it to the limit or not at all ("break"). Try working with half the weight, half the speed, or taking a low-intensity class (e.g. Yoga). You stay active and in your routine while allowing your body to recovery from stress you've been putting it through for the last three months.

At 33, am I the "older generation" you were looking for? LOL

Listen to your body and take a break. I have done this several times in the past three months, and weirdly, a weight loss always follows. It's what your body needs. Don't fight it. If you must, do some light exercise so you feel you are doing something. This is what I do.
