Fiber in diet

Hello! Looking at my food diary, I usually cross my daily goal for sugar (just by eating fruit and also granola for breakfast). I've also noticed issues with my fiber intake. Is it really bad to have too much of it?

  • Diet is very important and you can have up to 25 grams of fibre in a day. I am big on the fibre and have gone over that many times and my doctor told me that its unnecessary to eat that much but definitely more then 20 grams is good. How much fibre do you think you eat in a day?
  • I meant Fibre is very important although diet is very important too. LOL

I think it depends on a really subtle balance & whether or not you have IBS. I have found that too much can sometimes be a recipe for disaster!

Thanks for your replies. I eat a lot of oats, whole grain foods, veg and I get my fiber from them. Do units in out food diary show grams? What does too much fiber cause?

You have to really try to eat too much fiber. I regularly eat 40-50 grams a day (although lower some days).

Just make sure you're drinking plenty of water or you'll have ... issues. :-)

If you're using it as a crutch to get the laxative effect then, yes, it's a problem. If you are just going over the RDA eating normally then don't sweat it.

In case you weren't aware....too much will make you get bloating, flatulence and possibly diarrhea.

It really depends from person to person. For me, with my hypothyroidism, fiber helps with one of the more obnoxious symptoms (constipation yaaaaaay). My doctor recommended around 30-35 grams a day, but said I could go up to 50 if needed. For me at first, I had the bloating and flatulence as I increased my intake. However, once my body adjusted, I just get to be regular like everyone else. >.>

If I understand your question, you can have your diary also track your fiber grams. Go to: Settings; Diary Settings; and you can check off a box that allows you to track fiber.

EDIT: It looks like you already track fiber, sorry, my mistake.
