Hello my real name is not streetnamejim and I'm here to document my eating and exercising habits. Neither of which have I ever payed much mind in the past... as a matter of fact, I NEVER exercised in the past, but I sure did eat. Something hit me about 3 months ago to start riding a bike. I recall really enjoying riding my bike as a kid and thought it would be a fun thing to return to at my youthful age of 36 yo.

As a child I always liked riding long distances, but never really payed attention to how far I rode... we just rode our bikes to get places and sometimes they were pretty far away. I acquired a turd of a bike for $30 and started riding it 3 miles a day for a week or so in the local neighborhood. I've since started learning to tune-up-the-turd and set a goal to buy a new bike when I got 100 miles under my belt. Well, I continued to push myself over the past three months and now ride about 10-20 miles a day 3-5 days a week. The 100 miles passed about 500 miles ago and I still ride the turd because I'm saving for a really nice bike.

I rode without really losing much weight for about 2 months, then I decided to come here and start documenting my meals. I really dig the fact that I can "earn" more calories to eat by exercising. So that pushes me to ride after dinner so I can get a tasty snack in the evening. I've also abandoned meat made of land animals because they are the center piece to most meals and its easy to ask myself "is it meat? if yes, don't eat, if no, consider eating it". I love meat. But I'm making a conscious effort to avoid it to help me keep my calories down, not because I care about the feeling of my fellow beings in the Animal Kingdom.

I gotta say, its working. I started feeling more energetic on about the 3-4th day without meat and I've started losing weight too. It could be because I started paying attention and documenting my calories too, but who knows ... and who cares. :)

This got a little longer than I intended, but it is what it is.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to the fun. :)

welcome and good luck - keeping a food diary really does help to keep one honest!

I love my meat - but have given up alcohol - at least while I'm trying to lose weight. Then I will revert to drinking in moderation!

Add me if you like - I love riding and also need a new bike since my daughter fell in love with mine!
  • I started walking The beginning of July. Just walking my dog every morning for the good of both of us. Now we are up to 2 miles and I have been thinking that rather than extending my walk in the morning (time constraints), I might add a bike ride later in the day. I haven't ridden regularly for years and I have a decent bike. I even own a trailer in case I have to take me smallest kids with me.
I was actually thinking about this on our walk 20 min ago, so seeing your topic pop up was just reinforcement of the idea for me :-)
  • Thanks for the support peeps! :)

Yes, I've become much more aware of the alcohol too!! MMmmmm beer... The problem is that the QUALITY over QUANTITY doesn't help the caloric intake!! So yea, cutting it out is unfortunately the best option in this case.

On the meat front, I accidentally got a piece of bacon that was mixed in with some baked beans the other day and it was a heavenly surprise!! Hehehe... my kids laughed at my sudden joy of the bit of bacon. Its ok though.

Time constraint is definitely a limiter on the exercise front. If I can squeeze 2 hours just for exercise, I feel like I'm pushing it with the family. So usually an hour or so is all that is accepted so far... but I push it a little bit every now and again.

I'm glad to meet you and look forward to bantering about on here. :)

    Thanks!!

Re the meat...I was a vegetarian for years, prompted by my kids preferences, and all I missed were what I called the "condiment meats"....bacon, crumbled sausage, scrapple...all the salty, spicy ones! Now eat meat about once a month and fish pretty regularly.

Re the bike...oh boy, longing for a new bike, too. Mine is 30 years old and great quality, but I tempted myself by test riding a really nice new bike about 3 weeks ago and I've been drooling ever since :)

You excel at bantering. Also at riding and powering the will to avoid meat. I am a true blue carnivore (which conjures up really odd visuals, come to think of it).

    Go, you.
