CKD or Good old fashioned diet

Im having trouble deciding what type of diet is right for me. I am technically obese, even though I look pretty good for my weight as I carry it well and have alot of muscle. Regardless of that, I still need to lose alot of fat and Im waaaay bigger than I should be. I wanto to lose about 40 lbs. I was looking into CKD and it seems kinda scary, but Ive heard it cuts alot of fat. Im one of those people who thrives on good results and gives up pretty easily if I dont see any. I just need to know what works. Should I stick to making healthy choices and eating my 1200 calorie diet or should I try CKD? Is CKD good for someone who does alot of cardio? Im doing 5 times a week walking on an incline of 15% at 2-3mph for 60 minutes. I have a sedentary job also.

I don't know what CKD is, but the only weight loss method I adhere to is to eat wholesome, natural foods as much as possible, work out every day, and have treats in moderation.0

What is CKD?
I 2nd the pp who said wholesome foods..... that is the way to lose weight. Fruits, veggies, whole grains, low-fat dairy. YUM!!0 -
CKD is Cyclic Ketogenic Diet . You eat 60/30/5 Fat/Protein/Carbs and then Carb Up on the weekend. It's used by bodybuilders who want to cut fat for competitions and such. Im sure it works, just not sure I would work for someone like me who isnt a bodybuilder and doesnt want to be.0

just move your body more than you normally do. then you don't even have to diet.0

Calorie counting. It really works as long as you stick to it. Do some exercise and you can eat more. Easy peasey. Lol!:bigsmile:0

Chronic Kidney Disease?0

I just read up a bit on CDK - I really don't think this is going to help you in your goals... Have you tried tracking calories and exercise? It's really quite simple to record everything you eat, focus on nutrient rich foods, and move more. Diets like Atkins and the likes (anything that restricts any one nutrient) is a fad and not something most people can maintain long-term, IMO.0

Whew!! I work in healthcare so my only thought was Chronic Kidney Disease.0 -
Forget about 1200, eat 1500 and exercise. Enjoy the rest of your life being fit and happy.0

If you've made the decision to follow a ketogenic diet but also want to incorporate a good amount of training into your regimen, then a CKD would be a good choice.
But be sure you're making the right decision to follow a keto diet. Are you truly that insulin resistant?0 -

Wait what?
Just wow.0 -
CKD is really geared towards people who are very active. You use the weekend carb-ups to refill your glycogen stores for your workouts through the week.
If you don't want to workout, you can try doing a traditional low carb diet. It's not for everyone, but you can get great results.0 -

Come one now lets get serious...that doesn't really work.... does it?0 -
I don't know about the "cyclic" part, but I think for many people, adjusting their ratios of carb - fat - protein will really make a big difference. I tried to lose weight for 20 years by simply counting calories, and even though I ate less than I burned, and was very good & never cheated, I gained weight steadily. Incredibly frustrating!
Then I met my current doctor, who pointed out that although you get energy from carbs, fat or protein, the chemical reactions involved in converting them to energy are completely different. So, depending on your metabolism, your body may process one kind of calorie more efficiently than another. Based on a series of tests, my doctor recommended that I switch to a ratio of 5% carb, 30% fat, 65% protein. That's fewer than 30g carbs per day, which is a ketogenic diet like you're talking about. Since I've done that, four months ago, I've lost over 30 lbs. Losing weight for the first time in my life!
So whatever you decide, do NOT let anyone tell you it's just a "simple" matter of calories in - calories out. That's a myth and is not supported by the biochemical science involved. Our bodies are way more complicated than that. Also, do not let anyone tell you that ketogenic diets are dangerous or are not sustainable. I have met people (through my doctor) who have been on ketogenic diets for over a decade now and are in perfect health. It will not damage your liver or kidneys; that's a myth, too (some people confuse ketosis with ketoacidosis, which is harmful but a completely different thing).
Hope you find what works for your body. Good luck!0 -

yes, it absolutely does.0 -
before you slam it, why don't you try it? i don't "diet"; i eat pretty much whatever i want, but i do move a lot. i've lost almost 45lbs this way. i bicycle commute to work about 15-20m almost daily, i take tapdance classes and i hoopdance. i burn everything i put in and then some. of course, i don't eat fast food and i don't eat chips or drink soda every day, but i do eat them and i do drink it sometimes. i still go to parties, i occasionally drink alcohol and in every way, i sustain a normal lifestyle in accordance with other "normal" lifestyles and i still lose weight. why? because i move my body. it's really that simple.
edit: also my diary is open. i haven't been logging exercise or food the last couple months because the summer isn't a problem for me (i'm even more active in the summer and so i don't have to worry about it so much). the colder months are my issue areas, so i log pretty faithfully those times. in the summer, my appetite decreases significantly because it's hot. so you can take example from my earlier logging and cut it about 30% and that's about what i eat. just fyi, if you wanna look.
warm regards and happy weight loss!0 -

No, not "absolutely," and not for everyone. If that's true for you, then consider yourself lucky, and I'm happy for you. But it's not true for everyone.
I have always been very active, I was in marching bands and on dance teams, I've earned my black belt in Tae Kwon Do and I do aerobics and Zumba dancing. And I still gained 7-10 lbs a year my entire adult life without knowing why, no matter how active I was or how few calories I ate. People's metabolisms and hormones are very complex systems. So for some people, it's important for them to pay attention to the kinds of calories, not just the number. Please don't disparage people or make them feel badly just because they can't lose weight in the same way that you can, and please don't assume that people who are fat are lazy or are not exercising enough. I put up with unfair judgments like that my entire life, and I assure you, it's not helpful. Please try to remember that everyone's body is different.0 -

fair enough. i agree that not all calories are equal... it works for me; i guess i'm just lucky.
and it's not my intention to make anyone feel badly. most people could use to move more; maybe your situation is different and for that, this philosophy wouldn't apply, but i'm certain that most people with more than, say, 30lbs to lose could use to move their bodies more. eating less helps, certainly, and most definitely eating more whole foods is beneficial, but for most people, seriously, less calories consumed than burned is what makes the difference.
when i get down to my last 20lbs, i'll probably have to switch things up, but for now, this method has worked for me and almost everyone else i know. if it doesn't, it's simply because the body isn't being moved enough to burn what has been consumed.0 -

It depends on what you were eating before you started moving. I lost 24 lbs by just adding daily exercise, but that's because I was eating the number of calories my needs when I exercise. Eating that many calories and not exercising caused me to gain weight, starting to exercise again caused me to lose it again.0 -
Wow...this is my first post on any forum EVER and it certainly is interesting. I appreciate all the help and encouragement Ive received from this post as well as the laughs
"just move your body more than you normally do. then you don't even have to diet."
I wish that were true however Im Air Force and always doing PT so if it were that easy I wouldve lost it by now. It is my JOB to workout so, its hard to really get excited about it on my free time. Just like great gardners have the worst yards and housekeepers have the messiest homes...well sorta...
Anywhoo I have decide to stick to my plain ol diet because it doesnt make my brain hurt as much as planning the CKD does. And...Im gonna up my cals as suggested cause Im damn starving! Well...maybe just on workout days....Thanks all!0 -

in my opinion your best bet is to stop thinking about a diet, and look at a healthy lifestyle that you can maintain for the rest of your life... it wont be the quick fix you're after, but the long term results will be worth it!!0
