Anyone notice a reduction in GERD symptoms?

I've got GERD and I'd take medication for it twice a day, just for a bit of relief.

During the past couple of days of my current fitness routine, I've noticed a significant reduction in my GERD symptoms. I imagine this has to do quite a bit with my change in diet, drinking plenty of water, and ample amount of exercise. I also notice that heirloom tomatoes aren't as acidic as other tomatoes, which I've been including in my meals.

So, this whole routine is like killing two birds with one stone--I'll be losing weight and combating GERD.

Anyone else notice improvements like this?

  • I don't think you could say I have GERD (or at least not as bad as my dad has it), but I definitely notice a decrease in acid reflux and indigestion problems when I'm not eating crappy food. This has definitely been a win/win for me! Instead of reaching for the tagamet nowadays, I just stay far far farrrrr away from those 'triggers'.

Obesity brings with it a host of health problems.

Well, it makes sence what you say since I have never been diagnosed with GERD, however, recently I have not been eating healthy at all, in fact Ive been completely off track with my diet and excersice routine, and Ive been experiencing GERD symptoms, which makes me think hard about going back on track with my "lifestyle change"as I prefer to call it...

Yes, definitely. Heartburn is pretty much gone, except for the rare, rare occasion. I love not taking Zantac anymore!

I have a very bad case of GERD. Your testimony is a real encouragement.

How did Zantac work for you? I've been thinking to switching to it and leaving Losec behind.

Now that you mention it, I was popping several TUMS a day before I started MFP. I found I didn't need them any more after I lost about 5 lbs. Thought I must have stopped internalizing something stressful at the time, but now I'm wondering if it was just the weight.

    BONUS!!

I had been taking daily medication for GERD for about 3 years (after I got up past 185-190 lbs). Once I lost about 30 lbs., I was able to use my medication less often, and now at 55+ lbs. lost and nearly into a healthy weight zone, I've been completely off it for a couple of months. Mine was never triggered by any particular foods, so I'm sure it was purely mechanical--too much fat in my torso.

You betcha! After the first 10 pounds dropped so did the reflux, heartburn, and positional burning in my stomach. After 20 pounds gone so were all the symptoms. No more Zantac. Occasionally after a day where I eat a lot of bread type products I will get a bit of heartburn, but that is not often and tums takes care of it.

Yeah, I'm hoping I get to the point where I don't need to take a medication daily for it, and simply pop a Tums once in a blue moon.

Reading this testimony is very encouraging. I've been on Prilosec for many years. I'm down 30 lb, with another 40 to go. Now I'm really looking forward to dropping the meds (and avoiding ever having to start blood pressure or diabetes medicine!!!)
