Has anyone got a recipie for cottage pie that's not a diet breaker. I really have a hankering for one and hubby has offered to cook it for me :)

http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1559/quick-cottage-pie is a nice recipe. Comes in at 390 calories and is low fat.

I would make sure you use the leanest beef mince possible, and top with either sweet potato mash or cauliflower mash.
  • Just a tip: I always use 3/4 gound turkey/chicken, and the other 1/4 beef. The turkey/chicken tends to take on the flavour of the beef... ;)

    Good Luck!

Here are a few tips for lowering the fat & cals of a cottage/shepherds pie, and upping the nutrition too:

1- use turkey mince (Ground) or, if you can afford it extra lean beef mince (works out arounds the same cals). Drain off any fat after browning.

2- If using minced turkey/ chicken or lean pork you can add the beefy flavour by crumbling in a beef stock cube or two (I use a knorr rick beef stock pot gel)

    3. Bulk out the mince with chopped veggies- onions, carrots, and mushrooms.

    4. Use one or a combination of the following to top your pie:
    Mashed butternut squash
    Mashed carrots
    Mashed sweet potato
    Mashed Parsnips
    Mashed Cauliflower
Crushed new potatoes (They go nice and crispy in the oven)
Regular mashed potatoes made with skimmed milk

Instead of using a ready made sauce or packet- add the following to your meat & simmer:
    1 tin chopped tomatoes
    1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
    1 tbsp tomato puree
    2 bay leaves
    black pepper
    mixed herbs

if you're feeling cheeky- add a dash of red wine too!
