I've never taken any vitamins before (except when I was pregnant). Should I be taking some?? If so, which ones??

  • I would take a Omega Fish Oil supplement, Vit C, and maybe a daily multi-vitamin (womens formula for you obviously LOL)...b-12 if you need energy and immunity support, Ginko Biloboa if you need to focus more...etc

I love Source of Life Red. Anything made with whole food supplement is good. You can find this one at health food stores.
  • Absolutely. I drink Shakeology every day, and when I workout hard I supplement with a multi-vitamin and Omega-3 (Fish Oil).

Just avoid the vitamins that look cheap and are generally in most walmarts and such. If you can't find info on their quality control then skip them. I've been hearing bad things about GNC lately which sucks because that's what I was using regularly :(

vitamins are only used when food intake is not sufficient, athletes take it as a safety measure but if food intake is adequate then vitamins wouldn't really matter. If you are deficient in a marco/micro nutrient such as iron then yes vitamins should be taken... iron women should take a a vitamin but if you eat red meat then increase the amount of times you eat it and decrease eating/drinking foods the inhibit iron absorption

vitamin c tablets are a waste of money due to being a water soluble vitamin once max as being reach absorb then the body with get rid of the excess. Fruits are high in vitamin C, their is not need for vitamin c tablets..

When I took my nutrition class last semester, this topic definitely came up. while vitamins are good and can be healthy for you, you need to know a few things. First of all, a calcium supplement (unless a slow release one) is useless because we only absorb a little calcium at a time. Second of all, if you were to take a vitamin it may as well be a "total health" type vitamin. Thirdly, you need to be really careful about what you eat if you're taking vitamins because some extra levels of vitamins or minerals can be toxic.

But keep in mind that above all.. eating healthy enough to get these vitamins in your diet rather than a pill is better for you.

Also.. someone else mentioned the quality of vitamins. When it comes to generic vitamins, they are not regulated by the FDA, the FDA only reviews the effects on people and will discontinue production. It is important to know that a higher quality vitamin is better regulated and monitored for exactly what it has in it, whereas generic pills often have irregular amounts of content in them.

Vitamins are important, take a look at your food diary and if you are not getting enough of a certain one (Women usually aren't the best at getting all their Vit D) then take a multi vitamin. They are affordable and helpful... Mine make me feel more awake and ready to tackle the day. I think the fish oil or krill oil pills are okay, only take them if you are really working out hard or need some heart helping ingredients. I also take a green tea pill to keep my antioxidants up, but it's all up to you! :-) If you feel you need some vitamins, go for it! They make gummy vitamins for adults now! Yum!
  • I take acidophylis, primrose oil and natural senna everyday. Occasionally i will add a B12 complex - i think all of these are important to a women's body - and are not found in most foods that we eat.

Hi liz-- I've found it is very difficult to meet the minimum requirements for all nutrients on just 1200 cal/day-- I've been taking centrum perfomance--- I'm a huge fan of it-- I feel healthier, and I know I'm giving my body everything it needs to perform at its best :)

I believe natural food vitamin intake is precious, but I take a good vitamin supplement with full load of vitamins, just in case!

I'm not a doctor, but I don't think it would hurt to take a One-A-Day multivitamin. I take a Calcium+D supplement, Iron pill & Omega 3 once a day. In a perfect world, we'd get all the vitamins we need from the foods we eat, but for those of us who are dieting and exercising, we could use a little help. Plus, the human body is wired to take what it needs and expell the rest =)

black swan is right, if your eating right and to the max then taking a multi- vitamin shouldn't really be a problem is it only an issue when your not reaching RDI for many vitamins and are deficient.. vitamin D is a tricky vitamin because if you take a fish oil tablet for that when you could just go outside for 30minutes a take an receive vitamin d. their are many silly vitamins and minerals out their which are a waste of money if you get a genetic multi vitamin it should help.

if you take many different tablets for nutrition and vitamins the toxic affect could occur and then their are health issues with that so be careful a basic multi-vitamin should help you.

green tea pills are just silly when you can have a cup of tea for that.. having too many antioxidants can actually be a problem just be careful
