Can someone tell me how their very first 5K was? I am starting slow, just getting into walking/running and starting the couch-5K plan. I would like to attempt a 5K here in April. What advice do you have? How was your experience in your first race?

I couldn't believe how fun a organized race could be!

I started off in the back, but was surprised at how many people I was able to pass. April gives you plenty of time, you'll do great!! :drinker:

I was running longer on the treadmill when I did my first 5K. I was expecting the outside run to be difficult since the ground wasn't moving for me, but actually I think you go faster outside. It was pretty good! I had been working out and exercising for about 2 months before I tackled it. Now, I don't run 5Ks, only 8Ks and above. I figure if I'm going to run, it might as well count for a full workout!
  • Thanks for the tips! I always wondered what it would like to go from the treadmill to the streets! Good to know it isn't too difficult.

Which one are you considering in April?

I'm a swimmer / biker so I'm starting the couch to 5k plan to do the Spring Sprint Triathlon on Mission Bay in May. I think setting a goal of a 5k in April would help.

I did the same Triathlon in 2007, but my time was pretty pathetic, due my underdeveloped running skills. I walked much of it. My buddies who did it with me are weakest in swimming. They kept telling me that I'm lucky because if I get tired running I can walk. If they get tired swimming they sink.

I looked at the site and I'm interested. I have until the end of the month before the price goes up, so I'll see how the next few weeks of the running program goes.
