I had a cup of cooked regular oatmeal for breakfast and now I'm all jittery. I've had water this morning, I didn't have coffee... I can't figure out why I would be shaky?

Oh, and i don't normally have coffee so it's not a caffeine withdrawal thing...

Low blood sugar? I get it often. A piece of fruit and some cheese or peanut butter should help.

I get like that when I have too many carbs and not enough protein. Try a good combination of healthy carbs and protein and see if that helps.

Can you be tested for hypoglycemia?

Can you be tested for hypoglycemia?

It's not really a "disease", it just describes getting shaking when you blood sugar drops. Some of us are more prone to it then others. To avoid it, it's best never to eat carbs (especially sugar) alone. Always eat it with protein or fat. Fruit alone is actually a really bad snack for this reason. Carbs alone will cause your blood sugar to spike, then the pancreas releases insulin to fight the blood sugar, sometimes it will release too much and then your blood sugar will drop too low. Eating other things with carbs will prevent the blood sugar from spiking to began with.

Oh, I know it's not really a disease, I just wasn't sure if a doctor could test people to find out if that's really their issue or who's more prone. Thanks for the info!!

I am not a doctor... This is what I know from my ex being diagnosed with it. It is one of those things that in order for the test to do any good you have to be having a "shaky" attack at the time. It is a diagnosis made by observation and dietary information. The treatment is to eat a balanced diet, and to have small glucose objects available should you feel shaky. My ex had some wrapped hard candies in his pocket at all times.

I feel this way when I have just oatmeal with fruit for breakfast, I had to figure out to add some fat and protein in there. It helped dramatically.

I used to get shaky during my college classes, because my school recently implemented a "no food or drinks" rule in ALL of the classrooms...which included even having bottles of water. I noticed that when I'd go to get up from a 4-hour class, I'd feel shaky and dizzy, but as soon as I'd drink some water, I'd be fine. I felt this way at work too, if I hadn't drank enough water or was too busy to take a break. It hasn't happened since earlier this year, when I started keeping a bottle of water with me at all times, and thankfully, I'm done with the school with the "no drinks" rule.
