I recently just purchased Canola Oil Cooking Spray from the wonderful TRADER JOES! I heard it's good for cooking shrimp, chicken, veggies, fish.. etc.

Has anyone or does anyone use this spray? The extra virgin olive oil I have seems to be a waste of 190 calories added to my lunch or dinner so wanted to try something new that's also healthy and less calories!

Works well and certainly eliminates lots of calories. We use cooking spray in nearly every recipe we have that calls for sauteeing.

They have approximately the same calories per tablespoon. How was the EVOO a waste but the canola is not? I've got one of those Misto things (http://www.amazon.com/Misto-M100S-Gourmet-Brushed-Aluminum/dp/B00004SPZV) which I use with EVOO. It's a pump-up thing; no need for propellants.

Just bought 1 of those @ BB&B and Im using it instead of everything else. Gotta love those Misto sprayers.

You are virtually using the same thing. The low-calorie amount they give you is because the serving is so small on the spray. Most spray servings are for a 1/2-2 second spray...that isn't even enough to coat a tiny little broccoli floret! By the time you've sprayed your entire pan/skillet/whatever, you've used the equivalent to a serving size of your non-spray oil.

Word. I found out that you DO need to wash it out every 3 fill-ups or so, or else it will start spraying funny :) I just used water and a little dish soap and pumped a bunch of it through the system, and let it sit overnight. Good as new the next morning.

Thanks Taso! Just put one on my Amazon wish list. Will probably order today.
  • The "calorie savings" are based upon serving size and it's a bunch of marketing BS. Cooking spray bottles have a serving size of like 1/4 of a second. With that serving size, nutrition regulations say the content is insignificant, so they label it as 0 calorie, 0 fat, etc. 1 tablespoon of olive oil has same calories / fat as 1 tablespoon of canola oil. Canola is a genetically modified variety of rapeseed oil. I'd rather use olive oil (more natural) and control portion. Misto type spray bottles are a great idea.
