Nauseated after hard workout...

I joined a BodyFit Challenge at my gym ( think Biggest Loser type competition). Last night was our first session with trainer and for most of it I was seriously nauseated...willing myself not to vomit. The one male in our group ran to the bathroom to do just that. I was able to hold off until we were done, but then the floodgates opened, then opened some more...big time. Felt nauseated for about an hour afterwards. I'm not concerned with doing the wrong things, or working too hard, we are working with licensed & experienced trainer, so I don't think it's anything other than working really hard.

But how do I avoid it??

Yesterday I had normal lunch about 100, then a snack at about 400. Session was from 6-7. Should I eat lighter lunch and skip afternoon snack? Drink more? work a little easier? All the above?

Any advice would be great...thanks!!

Oh honey! It sounds like you're working hard! I'd say still eat at those times and make sure you are well hydrated! I'm thinking the nausea is just you're body getting used to it. I'm no expert though....

I always eat something about 1.5 hours before I workout. If I don't eat anything in the 2 hours before I workout, I feel weak and sometimes sick to my stomach. If you are going to be doing a hard workout, you need to make sure your body has the fuel it needs to get you through it.

If I'm working out and start feeling sick I'll sometimes grab an orange juice and drink that to help me feel better so I can finish my workout.

You're working hard. Honestly get in better shape and the feeling goes away. Your body has to get used to pushing so hard until then it's not gonna like you or your trainer very much.

Feeling sick during or just after a workout can be caused by a few things, low blood sugar from not eating enough or at all before exercising, overexertion, dehydration, and overhydration. This is most likely to be seen during or just after an intense workout, running, cycling or aerobics, stopping suddenly or pushing your body beyond it's limits.

Here are some ways to avoid it:

Eat about an hour before working out, high carb low fat foods are best.

Work at or one level above your current fitness level, group training is not for everyone, ask your trainer for alternate exercises or movements during classes or training session.

Hydrate before and after a workout, Before a workout you should drink about 17-20 ounces of water 2-3 hours before hand, a workout over one hour should include an electrolyte replacement such as gatorade. A good way to find out how much water you need is to weigh yourself before and after a workout, you should remain the same weight or an ounce or two lighter, heavier means too much water has been taken in, more than a pound in loss and you need to drink a little more during hard workouts.

Save your abdominal exercises for LAST, it is common for adults to suffer motion sickness from the act of working the abdominals and doing them first may cause naseau throughout your workout.

Last but not least, if it continues you should see your doctor to make sure there is nothing else going on with you.

So yes, you don't need to eat more just closer to your workout time, you may need to drink more before, you should modify the workouts to fit your physical capabilities today and remember, just because a trainer is certified or licensed doesn't mean they are paying attention. Talk to the trainer before the next session and ask them to include modifications you can use to build up your strangth with until you can push through the whole workout.
  • I find that I get extremely nauseated after a workout when I haven't had enough to drink... Perhaps you are dehydrated? Make sure you have water while you work out... Drink lots before and lots after...

Also, did you eat right before? That could be it as well...

U are working hard! Make sure to eat so your sugars don't drop and drink lots of fluid. Eventually your body will adjust

Thanks all....from what I've learned, my body WILL adjust, I guess it's fairly normal when working exceptionally hard... I just can't believe it. About a month prior to the challenge starting, I've been working my *kitten* of trying to get my stamina level up and last night it felt like I've been on the couch for 6 months!!

Ab work was last, which was good...we all were laying on the mats dying!! It was a great workout and i can't wait for more, but soo not wanting the need to run to the bathroom again.
