Shoulder pain whilst running?

I've been running for about 3 months now, but recently I've started getting pain in only my right shoulder whilst I do it. It doesn't start immediately, maybe after 20mins of running, after which it's a fairly constant pain. Perhaps stopping a little before the end, but then I'm so exhausted and willing myself to keep moving that I probably just don't notice it anymore!

I've been told my form is correct, and I don't feel particularly tense whilst I run, so I don't think I'm holding that in my shoulders. And equally I don't use one arm more than the other.

I don't strength train at the moment - I keep meaning to start and not getting around to learning what to do - but does anyone think that could help at all? I always attributed pain in my legs to the muscles not being used to the work and that the weakest point would be the most painful, and I was wondering if the same principle could be applied?

Also, I went swimming yesterday, and when doing back stroke I could occasionally feel that shoulder kind of grating, which the other didn't do.

And I sleep on my right side (bad I know) so my right shoulder is in contact with the mattress - should I try and sleep in a different position?

Sorry for so much information, but basically I'm not sure what it is or what I can do about it (because I end up trying to run whilst holding my right arm still which is impractical and not particularly more comfortable!). Any advice much appreciated.

I used to have bad shoulder pain when running too, but it was only while running. I found it I changed my arm/hand position, it helped.

If you're hearing a grating sounds, it could possibly be small bone spurs developing along your scapula at the point of muscle attachment. This is fairly common. People that have their rotor cuffs cleaned out have the same problem, but on a much larger scale.

I have similar problems, and I've incorporated a lot of shoulder and neck stretching into my cool downs and yoga days, and this has helped me a lot.

Also, focus on keeping your shoulders down and back. Subtle changes can make a huge difference. I never thought I hunched my shoulders until I actively started trying to keep them down. I sometimes have to stop mid-run to stretch out my neck/shoulder area.

    Good luck!!!

You can get pain in your shoulder for all sorts of weird reasons. Like stomach or liver problems, for example!! Spine issues? Bad shoes? Diaphram spasm? It could just be indigestion!! Or you're not breathing right? Let alond the fact it could be bone or muscle related.

Process of elimination I'm afraid. Consider your all round health and go from there. An oseopath/chiropractor visit would eliminate any bone/muscle probs. But perhaps start with your breathing.......

    Good luck :flowerforyou:
