I walk 4 miles a day and invested firstly in a pair of MBT's, and when they died some Sketchers Shape-ups. I honestly can't tell you if they tone you in the way they're 'meant' to, but they are both designed for walking and are both also extremely comfortable and supportive. Quite expensive, but depending on how much you're walking you might want to invest. Can't play badminton in them though, had to get some flat trainers for that ;o)

I use the Saucony brand for everything I do. Walking..and in the gym. They work great. And I found them pretty inexpensively at Shoe Carnival. Bought two pairs..and they are still working strong. But then again..I buy new althetic shoes about every year to replace.

Not sure if this was helpful or not. Good luck!

*lol* I started walking in DC skater shoes. Nearly crippled my feet (especially as they where quite old) and then one day it rained and (as they had holes) I squelched home. That was the day I decided to invest!

It might be best to go to a sports store and get some advice, but remember they will be trying to encourage you to spend as much as possible. Depending on how heavy you're going to start, buy some less expensive ones and see how you go. I found that my MBT's lasted about 500 miles, which sounds like a long way, but was actually only 6 months, so you'll have plenty of scope to research how your feet do with different styles.

    Best of luck!
