my BMR is about 1,372. i know this means this is what my body burns if i was to just lie around all day. so do i need to eat at least this many calories a day to lose? or do i need to net at least this amount?

That depends. You should follow the set up guide for your calories. It's located under the goals. It will help you with that. My bmr is 1800 I get about 1200 a day but I have a sit down job and only exercise 3-5xs a wk.

You need to eat that many. You body needs at least that to function and you do so much more throughout the day than you think. You will lose weight for a bit, then you will be tired and you will plateau. eat more. I was eating 1300 (my bmr is 1400) and I lost a lot of weight, then i stopped, and I was tired, slowing down, etc. I upped my caloreis to 1570 and I lost two pounds. Your body needs fuel to run.

you need to eat less than your maintainence calories, which will be quite a bit higher (prob around 1700)
  • Do you workout? If so, then you need to be eating MORE than your BMR.

If you are sedentary (little or no exercise) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.2
    If you are lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.375
    If you are moderatetely active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.55
    If you are very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.725
If you are extra active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.9

To lose 1 pound a week, subtract about 500 calories a day.

Your BMR doesn't really mean a whole lot and doesn't directly relate to what you should eat.

BMR + activity calories + exercise calories - deficit required for desired weight loss = what you should eat.

Activity calories is what you burn by working, cleaning, cooking, living.

exercise calories are of course what you burn when you exercise

If you want to lose a pound a week (RECOMMENDED) your deficit = 500 a day.

MFP calculates all these numbers daily. Other sites, trainers, etc, just use averages to figure these things out.

Your BMR is the number of calories needed per day for the functioning of the body's organ systems. Anything you do BESIDES unstimulated resting adds to this number. The number of calories you should eat depends on how much you want to lose and how active you are. In order to lose 2 lbs/week, you need to have a 1,000 calorie deficit per day (to lose 1 lb of fat, you need to have a 3500 calorie deficit). According to my Bodybugg, I burn between 2400 and 3400 calories per day (this includes my resting metabolic rate), which means I should eat between 1400 and 2400 calories a day to keep that weight loss rate.

Does this make sense? Answer your question?

Unless you lie flat on your back in bed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with a catheter and bedpan so you don't even have to go to the lavatory, you need to be eating more than your BMR to stay the same weight.

    What is your goal weight?

    my goal weight is 120lbs
  • Don't be worried about eating more. You are probably not eating enough and that is why you are not losing any weight. You are at a very healthy weight for your height already. Are you doing any workouts?

i workout everyday. burning between 300-600 calories each day. i have my settings set to lose 1lb a week. without exercise MFP says i should eat 1490 calories but alot of people have told me since i am so close to my goal weight i need to change my settings to .5lb a week which allows me 1790calories a day plus workout calories. i am just worried that if i eat more i will gain weight.

I just figured up your BMR with your exercising everyday. You need to be eating 1,952 to lose 1 pound a week.
