why is it not recommended to work out at night? It seems like that's the only time i have to get in a good work out some days...

if i do work out at night, how long should i wait before going to bed?

really? I always thought working out at night was better for you because your burning the calories you ate all day....thats weird..
  • I think the idea there is that it raises your internal body tempeture, which is counterintuitive to what goes on w/ your body at night...lower temp, slowing down, etc. That can make it more difficult to fall asleep.

I know when DH has soccer, he can't shower, and go to bed...he has to unwind for a while first...can make for some late nights for him!

I have heard that it doesn't matter when you workout night, day. I have for the most part always workout at night and I don't see a side effect to it. I normally workout about like 9 or so but I don't go to bed till like 11
  • I always workout at night. It calms my nerves and I am able to sleep at night after I put the kids to sleep.
I find it difficult to work out in the mornings.

This is funny... I was just wondering if I should go ahead and workout later tonight because I have so much to do... I think I will give it a try.

I have seen research about the best times to work out - they usually emphasize mornings or early afternoon... BUT

    1) everyone is unique
    2) if it's the only time you can do it, I'm sure it's better to work out late than to not work out at all.

I've been told by personal trainers and such that it doesn't matter what time you work out. They said that you should exercise when you're most awake. I exercise when I get home from work. If I were to exercise in the morning, I wouldn't put as much effort into.
  • I agree that it's best to do what you feel best doing. I personally have a better workout when I do it in the afternoon. I'm waaay to sluggish in the mornings to really do much of anything. I like things slow and calm for a few hours while I return to the land of the living.

By lunch time I'm usually with it enough to do it, but also very hungry so I don't workout until I've eaten and, depending on how much I ate, prefer to wait an hour or so before exercise. So, my choice workout time is anywhere from 3 to 7. If I wait till much later then that I'm already getting sleepy and don't preform as well. The few nights I have worked out between 8 and 9 I noticed it being a little harder to wind down, but that's probably because my 'normal' bedtime is 9 or 10.
  • thanks!
i guess it's just the whole "winding down" thing that would be an issue, but it doesn't seem to be a problem from me. burning calories is burning calories, right?

    thanks everyone!
