Nuts! Something I didn't know

So, I always knew I was supposed to buy raw nuts - you know, the unsalted kind. What I didn't realize is that when nuts are called "roasted" it means they were cooked in vegetable oil. Seems like common sense, I guess, but I never really thought about it. On the other hand, Dry Roasted means nuts roasted without oil. You all may already know this, but I thought I would pass it on anyway! On that same note, there are many peanut butters out there that claim they are natural but are actually made with sugar and palm oil, so read your labels before you buy!

I like to buy raw almonds and toast them on an ungreased cookie sheet, that way I know there are no added oils.

    Thanks for the explanation!

I recently found out that raw almonds are not always raw. They have to be pasteurized which involves heating them above 105 degrees, which makes them technically not raw. But they are allowed to be labeled raw because they haven't been "cooked". Those who follow a raw diet maintain that raising a food's temperature above 105 damages the nutrients.
When I follow a raw diet, I'm only about 75% raw anyway, so it doesn't matter that much to me. I figure they are still better for you than ones that have been roasted, dry or otherwise.

When I saw the title of this thread, I was thinking a different kind of "nuts" until I saw this was posted in F&N and not Chit Chat. Sorry.

I love nuts. So good for you! Thanks OP.

[no joke forthcoming, too easy....] Makes sense to me- 'cockail' peanuts are aweseom, and dry roasted make me grimmace. Seems to follow that the less tasty one is better for you! haha

[sheds a tear for cocktail peanuts... its been too long, old friends....] sigh.

no joke forthcoming?? I'm disappointed in you..

I would've gone with the 'I didn't know they were so hard to shave'
