Our HOA is awful too. As much as we pay and we dont even have any community privledges, like a playground for the kids, or a community pool. Instead we get letters telling us we need to paint our fire wall, nail up gutters, pressure wash the siding, and mow the grass... I think the man who runs it has it out for us because a lot of people have really crappy firewalls and nasty houses month after month, but we get letters constantly.

Were the rules disclosed when you bought the house? If they weren't you have a reason to be angry if they were then you knew this going in. I would love for my neighborhood to be a HOA then maybe I would not have to look at fallen fences, unmowed lawns, peeling pain and trash cans in the front yard. City living!

I live in an HOA community and love it..now. We had a horrible HOA President that was running it into the ground but alot of people in the community spoke up and signed petitions and had him fired so now our new board is awesome.

that's why i won't live in a gated community. My best friend does, and doesn't have a say in anything. I get it for condo fees, but don't tell me how to plant my bushes in the backyard, or what color my front door can be...I pay out my butt to live here!

I wouldn't own a house that was part of an HOA if someone gave it to me.

This. Unless you're paying for it, then you can kindly mind your own flippin' business.

    ETA: Let me clarify.

I don't give a ratsass what color your curtains are or how many trees you do or don't have. I don't care if your grass is 1/2" or 3/4". As long as the house doesn't look like dog poop, then what's the big deal. I dunno. I lived in poor and crappy neighborhoods most of my life. I know what it's like to see trash, cars, etc all over the place. At home, the city actually comes and write citations if you have cars parked on your lawn for more than a day or two. Not a HOA.

I've also lived in nice neighborhoods without a HOA. The neighborhood was nice, and people worked to keep it that way. Maybe the maturity level was higher where we didn't need a Daddy to come over and tell us to pick up our toys. I liked that neighborhood more than some of the gated HOA communities simply because the houses weren't all the same. I hate that cookie cutter look. Boring. Snoozeville. Bleh.

Like others have said, I'll just stick to living in the country where it's just my pretty, well-kept house, a field, and some trees.

My parents live out of city limits with no HOA...their neighbor never takes care of his yard and it's full of JUNK...not to mention he goes outside in a drunken rage in the middle of the night working on his trucks and motorcycles...it's a double edge sword if you ask me.

I would never live in a neighborhood without an HOA. Nice neighborhoods can look rundown by people who don't care about what their house and neighborhood looks like. HOA's also pay for the upkeep of the landscaping around the sub division and any maintenance of the pool or play ground. I'm glad to know there is someone I can call when my neighbor is parking his car on his front lawn!

No, I'm just exaggerating to make a point. Point is: You have no control over what your neighbor does without an HOA.

Actually most of the time there is at least some recourse for serious issues. Counties and cities both usually have guidelines / ordinances that prohibit abandoned cars, grass so high it is a health hazard (haven for rodents). swimming pools that become mosquito infested, etc.

As of now HOA are useless since there are tons of foreclosures in many neighborhoods.
