NSV!!! So proud of my babies!

Quick background: My mother and I raise my ten-year old twin nieces. Hereafter referred to as "my kids" or something similar. It's just easier.
I made the decision to lose weight about two weeks ago. The diet I began was no good for me (I wasn't eating nearly enough calories), but I didn't realize that until I joined MFP.
Anyway, the habits I'm picking up from this site and other nutrition research are rubbing off on my kids. My mother took them school shopping today and they came home with Happy Meals, but I was so shocked when they emptied their bags and I saw they'd chosen apples over fries!
One of my girls has been eating a healthy snack before dinner to make sure she "doesn't over-eat", and they've both stopped asking for salt.
This past week, they've been jogging around the block a few times a day, and they sometimes do my workouts with me.
Now, I know they're only ten (also know that McD's isn't great for them - was just proud of the apple for fries swap!), and I want to be clear that I am NOT pushing my lifestyle on these kids. I don't want to give them a complex. They just look to me as a role model and copy what I do, and I'm glad I'm finally giving them good habits to mirror.
Love them!

You are being a great mom! Keep up the good work! What you do is a million times more powerful than what you say.0

Your post made me cry a little! What an awesome example you are to these girls. They are beautiful. I think sometimes we don't realize the impact we have on the little ones in our lives until we see them modeling our behavior, good and bad Good for you for being such a great role model. Every small decision -- like choosing apples over fries -- is one step closer to living a healthy lifestyle.
What a GREAT payoff.0 -
This is so great! Be proud of yourself! Because of you these little girls have a chance at leading healthy lives with a good self image. Keep up the great role modeling and good luck with your goals!0

First. They are beautiful children!
Now, what is happening for you is exactly what I hope is happening for my 9 year old son. I am starting to see him make better choices, not asking to eat out as often and loves taking walks with me in the evening.
You seem to doing a great job as a role model!0 -
Nice! After i was on here for a month i weighed my son and he actually lost 2 lbs! He is still not back up to his original weight and i swear he must of shot up 2 inches in 3 months now. Just from healthy food choices and more exercise (playing around outside and swimming). I dont have him on a diet but i have better food choices available in the house.0

that is wonderful! if someone had thought me what I'm learning now when I was their age, I would not be in this situation. Glad you are such a good influence0

Thank you all for your compliments!! The fact that my journey benefits them as well as me makes it all the more worthwhile and, somehow, a little easier.
They're eating celery sticks and peanut butter right now, when a couple of weeks ago, they'd have asked for cookies.
So proud I could bust! :bigsmile:0 -
What an awesome roll model you've become! Congrats to both you & them for your healthier habits!0

{*Sniff* Wipes away a small happiness tear.}
Good on you and great for YOUR kids! You're the leader of the pack!0 -
First let me say, they are adorable!!!
Second, anything you are changing in your life is bound to rub off on them. They are probably more likely to support you in the ways they are already. And seriously, if the changes you make now can help them live their lives healthier and NOT have to be in the situation we are all in... good for you.
And Mcdonalds occasionally isn't a bad thing.. especially if they are picking apples over fries!!!

that is so cool! my kids have been getting a little more physically active...my youngest commented that he thinks his legs are stronger now than 2 months ago, from all the bike riding we've been doing. my kids have crazy fast metabolisms, and are at the lower end of normal for weight for their ages, but strength will serve them well. when we shop, they read the labels. i don't restrict their food in any way, and they tend to be pretty healthy eaters cuz i make sure there is lots to choose from, (daddy always buys some extra junk, lol- they are pretty good about buying bad food that I dislike so i am not tempted) when looking at a new item in the store they will say, "hey mom, this one's not too bad for calories, and the fat's pretty low too, just so you know if you might want some for a snack" LOL0
