I just want to say that I have started to spread 1 tablespoon of hummus (half a serving) on my sandwich and LOVE it! The red pepper is my favorite.
What do you use hummus for?

Only everything. I make my own & put it on grilled chicken, veggies, crackers, sandwich spread. Delicious!0

My FAVORITE is 2 slices pumpernickel bread with 2 tbsp. hummus, 1 slice swis cheese, and a big pile of alfalfa sprouts. YUM!0
-
How do you make hummus? I'd love to make my own!0

I make a variation on this one. I use my own fresh minced garlic and I don't add the olive oil. SO easy I made a triple batch the other day, jarred it up & sent it home with friends!

Thanks, I am so going to try this! I'm so excited! Do you know how many calories it is? Did you put it in the database here without the olive oil! Seriously, I think I'm gonna make this tonight!0 -
Wait, where in the grocery store will I find chic peas?0
-
I've never put it in a calculator b/c if graded, I would get an "F" for calorie counting. I really suck at it. :blushing: I should do that at some point just for my general knowledge.
Chick peas are AKA garbanzo beans (just in case you didn't know that). I get organic ones that I find near beans, rice, legumes, etc... I think if you look near baked beans, kidney beans, etc...you should be able to find them there.
Sorry, that really wasn't much help was it?! :blushing:0 -
No, it totally was! I know exactly where to look. We have an international aisle. I'm going there as soon as I get out of the gym after work.
And if you use this website : http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/recipe_analysis.php
you can put in the recipe and it will calculate the calories! So cool, so I think I'll do that!0 -
I love love love me some hummus!
I also make a variation with white beans.. nummy.
Sara...do you remember when I got my food processor??? I made 15 different types of hummus. Had to stop for a while:sick:
I make homemade pita chips. I spray the pita bread with olive oil, just a little, whilst heating up my george forman (or any skillet will do) and make it extra crispy!
I have to be sure to measure my portion of hummus as I have been known to eat 8 oz in a sitting!!0 -

I think I was just getting into the boards then, but I do remember. Did you have too much hummus? Blasphemy!
Where do you find tehini in the grocery store? I've seen a LOT of recipes call for that, but I've never seen it...although, I have never actively pursued it, either. :bigsmile:0 -
Never thought about it as a sandwich spread. I will be trying that tomorrow! I make roasted red pepper and usually eat it with pita chips0

Girl, I don't even think the grocery stores around here HAVE a Kosher section. Could be my problem. :huh:0
-
I like to eat half a can of chickpeas for lunch. Sprinkled with a dash of garlic salt.
All variations of hummus are good. . good. ..good. Has to be good for me, right ???0 -
I found another recipe made with yogurt in place of the tahini. I don't like the number of calories the calorie count website gave me for it though. :frown: But the serving sizes for the one with yogurt are quite bigger than for the one given on here. I didn't make it last night, and I'm not sure yet which recipe I'm going to try. Still shopping around.
I do however have the store bought hummus on my sandwich again! Can't wait for lunch!0 -

well it is middle eastern so just run done to the Kosher deli and pick up a can!
Seriously I have read that plain yogurt can be substituted. Tahini is ground sesame seeds from what I read on the can. I am not into make anything like that, but did see recipes to make tahini too!0 -

Super Healthy Hummus Recipe #90086
Taken off a website, don't have the reference. An excellent hummus, the only one I make anymore. You really need a blender or food processor to get the consistency right. 1/4 cup = 1 point ww.
by Kasha
10 min | 10 min prep
SERVES 6
3 garlic cloves, minced, more if you like
1/4 cup plain low-fat yogurt
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon olive oil
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 (19 ounce) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
Combine everything in blender or food processor and process until smooth.
The blender gives the best result.
If you need more liquid to make a nice consistency, add a bit more yogurt.
Chill.
Serve with pitas or as a veggie dip.
I think I'm going to add some roasted red bell peppers and maybe use a tad less yogurt and lemon to make it less sour.0 -

No problem! I'm excited b/c my sister is staying with me tomorrow, and she likes hummus. Usually, we buy a bag or two of Sunchips and sit and watch movies and eat both bags. This time, I told her I was making hummus, and we were going to eat it with pita chips and carrots!0
-
Oh, I'm so glad that your sister is able to stay with you this weekend to keep you company!
That hummus recipe looks delicious!
AWTY - Kosher deli? Hmmm...I live in NW Ohio. I don't think I've ever seen anything but SALT labled Kosher. LOL I now have a new mission. Find Kosher food at the local super market. :bigsmile:0 -
Aw, thank you. As long as the weather doesn't get bad. It's not supposed to be too bad, but my sister is scared to drive in anything worse than a steady rain, and it's a 90 minute drive to my house.
We have Kosher aisles. Not every grocery store though. But when I lived on Long Island...there were entire Kosher stores.0 -

Mission today: search for on line Tahini
:flowerforyou:0 -
That's a good idea. And I think you can order just about anything online!0
-
I eat hummus with baby carrots sliced green peppers.0
-
I've found tahini at the organic grocery store in the same area as peanut butter and almond butter. Perhaps it'll be in the organic section at a regular grocery store.0
