I have a question about Heart Rate Monitors - I'm hoping that someone here might be able to help.

My husband and I are looking at purchasing two of them, and wanted to know if they are gender specific? Would it matter if I purchased a men's watch?

Thanks in advance,

they shouldn't be, you program your stats in the watch so it calculates properly. Polar makes a good one for straight up cardio, garmin makes great running ones

No, they should have an option when you enter your initial stats into the watch. At least my Polar has the selection option.

It depends on what ones you buy..Timex tends be to geared to males because there is no setting that allows you to enter gender. Polars, you can enter all of your information so it wouldn't matter if it was a male or female watch.

Polar does sell men's and women's versions of almost all of their HRMs from what I remember seeing when I was shopping. But the actual settings and functionality are identical, including telling it up front if you are male or female. The differences between the men's and women's are color and size. The mens have watch bands that will accommodate larger wrists and chest bands that accomodate larger bodies, at least in the ones I looked at. Though, the chest band that came with my women's watch matched the size description for what was included in the mens. It's totally adjustable for size though and I adjusted it to fit me just fine.
