Hi all,

I was on depo provera for 9 months have been off it for 2 months now my doctor has put me on to monofeme which I started when I was due for the next shot.

While on depo I gained 5kgs so 11 pounds which I think was meant to be the normal weight gain. The trouble is it has decided to all go to my stomach and hips.

Before depo I only weighed 48 kgs and now weigh 53 kgs. I don't mind weighing 53kgs because I was under weight for my height before (161cm) but I just don't like having a puffy stomach and muffin top.

I'm just wanting to know of anyone that has had some success losing the weight they gained and how they are doing it? Also how long did it take?

I understand that the depo may not be out of my system yet would this be why I haven't really seen any change? Should I stop monofeme as well?

I have continued to eat how I always have and have just been exercising alot more often since getting off depo.

Last week I managed to weigh 52kgs but I have since gone back up to 53kgs, my weight never seems to be constant and I always weigh myself in the morning at the same time each week. I have decided not to weigh myself for a month as this is when I go back to the doctor to decide what I want to do next.

Any advice would be much appretiated.
Thanks

I've been on depo since January and have continued to lose weight as steadily as I did before I got on it. I watch my calories and workout regularly. Simple as that. Almost everyone reacts differently to hormonal bc, though, so you could just be one of those people that gains weight on it. I'd wait a couple months and if nothing changes, try a different form. Good luck!

I have been on depo for 2 years. It never occurred to me that that could be the reason for my weight gain-I assumed it was because of my student living!

I am still the depo and sticking to my calorie goal and exercise and I seem to be losing pretty well. So my advise is keep going and if there are specific areas you do not like about yourself then maybe work on some toning (lunges etc for legs and situps for tum)

I gained massive amounts of weight on depo - even when watching calories and exercising. So everyone's body is different. However, once all the depo was out of my system (it took about a year - sorry to say), I did lose it the old fashion way. Watching calories and exercising and it came off at a normal pace.

Just a watch out for you - I had lots of issues coming off depo. All my hormones started up at seperate times. So I ended up having to take a few different drugs and then have a DNC, and finally had to go on the pill before things worked themself out. And although I can't contribute it to the depo at all - I also had a benign breast lump show up around the same time that had to be removed. Ugh - it was a horrid experience for me. Hope going off it goes MUCH better for you!!

I agree with epj78...it can take up to a year at least the literature and how our gyn doctor in our medical practice teaches however studies showed in the past usuall American women were the ones who gained the most weight vs other countries. However, All women bodies are different so it may take you longer to get out of system. I suggest continue eating healthy and exercise maybe add a day or more intensely to help lose the weight. Keep trying don't give up. Most of the clients I have had eventually did lose the weight so I say for you success is around the corner.

I'm so sorry to hear what you have been through. My doctor put me straight on the pill and the only thing I have had so far is horrible cramping the first month which I never had before, this month seems to be okay. Hopefully that's all I get but I will definitely get some test done next month. Thank so much for telling me your story.

Mine was about 10 years ago - so I bet they've learned a lot since then!! And I was on depo for over two years when I went off. Depo just never did agree with me - I was a totally different person on it. I didn't realize it at the time, but my friends did and I do now looking back on it. I just had zero emotions. I was never happy, never sad, made all my decisions on logic instead of taking feelings into account. It was just a medication that I didn't get along with - others swear it is their best friend.

Hmmm I guess everyone does have diff experiences! I love depo! I don't get periods which is FAB! No moods swings and I am pretty sure most of my weight gain is due to me drinking nearly every night and takeaways as a student.

I have never heard negative things about it, however I am now not looking forward to coming off it one day!! thanks for all the info guys, Interesting thread.

    Good luck with it all!
