I am new to running, and the balls of my feet sting/burn so much! They are bright red around the edges, and that's where it hurts the most. Am I simply building up calluses on the balls of my feet (they have always been soft), or is this something else that I should be concerned about?

Sounds like you don't have the proper shoes. I'd look into getting fitted for some shoes.

Could be your feet getting used to it but I would say you may need better shoes or socks.... They make socks for running so you don't get any friction burns which is what that sounds like....

    First, stop and rest.
If while you're running you feel more then normal muscle pain you should stop and rest and listen to your body.
If it doesn't get better or if the pain is already too intense seek medical help.

    Before running again:
Have a look on your shoes, make sure they are appropriate and have the appropriate cushioning for you.
Have a look at your form (search for POSE Running on google its a great help).
Make sure you're wearing the correct socks too.
If you get better, start running again and it happens again, seek expert help immediately.

It could just be blood rushing through vessels more than normal. My legs would get itchy when I first started running from scratch. It went away after a week or two.

But like the others said, check your shoes. Properly fitted shoes, laced not too tight, may be the solution.

Thank you, I didn't even think about wearing proper socks! And I'll be visiting a running store soon...

    Yes!! Proper shoes and insoles!!!

I paid about $70 for some insoles that were made specifically for my feet, but ended up using "Green Super Feet" from my hospital pharmacy for $30 and they are better than the $70!

Good luck! Running is the best and addictive!!!!! Love it!!!
