Heart Rate Monitors - how do people use them?

Hello

I'm thinking of getting a heart rate monitor. I'm pretty near my goal weight (2lbs away!) but think it would be helpful in stopping me from gaining weight.

I'm not sure how people use them though. Do you just have them on when you exercise? Or do you wear them all day? Are they good for maintaining weight loss?

I'd really appreciate your advice and to hear about how you use yours.

Thanks!

I use mine when I exercise, and it generally helps with knowing how many calories you burn. Im nog sure that it would make much difference to maintaing weight loss as you have done well already without one, some times I find it helps me work out harder as Im more conscious of how many calories Im actually burning

When I exercise, Training a client or taching class that is it. Or it becomes Obsesive. It is a great tool used the right way :-)

I hit "start" on my HRM when I'm doing cardio exercise (Zumba, jogging). I hit "stop" when I'm done. I like to use HRM's so I can visually see where my HR is at, that way I can increase the workload if I'm going too easy or slow down if I'm going too hard.

I have a BodyMedia Fit that I wear all the time, and then for workouts I also put on a Polar HRM. Regular HRMs are not accurate for all-the-time wearing.

I use my HRM everytime I excersise, I find it helps me to push myself harder when I see my heart rate is not at the max rate.
Also it gives you a better idea of the calorie burn compared to MFP estimate... I found they over estimate the burn sometime by
quite a bit. I was so glad I never ate back my calories back before I got the HRM!
Even though I am in maintance mode now, I will contiue using it!

I better throw this in here: if/when you do get a HRM be sure to figure out your zone using the Karvonen formula. The traditional HR zone doesn't take into account your resting heart rate RHR. Everyone's zone is a little different.
