Friends Make it Harder

I went to a fitness class with a friend this morning and she kept trying to talk to me while I was following the workout. Then, afterwards she was complaining that she was hungry and needed food. I originally said no but she made me feel guilty so I caved. I haven't totally screwed up my calories for the day but I'm still a little annoyed. I just feel like I'm so much more motivated and so much less likely to give in to temptation if I do it alone. She thinks it's fun going to a class together and I don't think she realises I don't want to have fun! I'm serious about getting fit and eating healthily and I want to go to a class and literally work my *kitten* off.
Anyone else feel like this?

I would tell her how you feel. If it keeps happening tell her you need to go alone.0

Tell her that you are not there to take it easy and that you do not want to eat after your work out as it messes up your schedule. Ask her to join the site so she can see what you are doing and maybe she will get it and be more apt to take it seriously like you are. I am just like you, I don't mind having a good time working out but I'm there to kick my own butt and get the job done!0

I have a friend like that I slowly stopped going to the gym with her because she wouldn't even try while we were there and then she would go to mcd's drive thru directly from the gym. What makes it worse? We were actually in a weight loss competition! Biggest loser at golds gym I decided I didn't need her negative influence and I don't discuss diet or weight loss with her!0

That's tough...my running buddies all have a similar goal, to be better runners so that makes it so much easier than what you're dealing with. Hang in there and just tell her you have other plans for food and that you can't go with her.0

Friends can really suck in certain ways.
My Grandmother had an expression "No one will tell you to wash your face so you look better than they do".
Its easy to imagine that being with a friend would be more motivating, but in this case its just not true.
Go on your own.

Thanks guys. She is smaller than me and I think she has it in her head that we're both the same size when we're not. It's like she's a little bit blinded by how much weight I have to lose.0

Sorry to tell ya but she wants to socialize or hangout with you. Since your working out she tags along to spend time. Thats nice but her focus is not your focus. Find other places/ things to do with her. Stick to your guns on food. Be up front. Nobody can love you more than YOU. If this person is a real friend she will support you. If not then oh well.0

I've had friends like that and I have friends going through that right now.... If you are finding it disruptive with her there, I'd say maybe you need to consider doing your own gym thing, and find something else the two of you can share- like maybe a walk around a park or somethig. That way you can push yourself on your own, and then you can have a gab session while you're walking and enjoying the great outdoors...0

I agree with world2c. In fact, if I were you I would stop seeing that particular class as a time to work out hard and start seeing it as a time to bond with your friend. Then, I would plan to do something else to work hard that day. Make it a consistent plan so you can plan around it without too much anxiety. Save calories for getting food with her after. If it's in the morning, just have a small snack before class and then get breakfast with her. Dinner? Same. Have a small snack before class and then suggest you two cook something for lunch or grab some fruit and make sandwiches. There's nothing wrong with exercise being a fun, social activity. You could even do a hard work-out before the class and then maybe you'll be okay with taking it easy in class.0

If I was paying a fee to attend a fitness class - I wouldn't appreciate the interruptions and the distractions. I'd be there to seriously work out.
Walking around the neighborhood would be a different situation tho' - walking & talking would probably be ok.
Maybe just an honest heart to heart talk about your fitness goals would be the best - so that she understands why you want to take your workout time seriously.0 -
Thanks guys. I appreciate all the advice. I do pay for classes (it's £6 per class too!) so don't really want to socialise there. I'm seeing her on Monday so I'll float the idea of a walk n talk! Thanks again0
