whey protein?

so i started lifting more weights and thought it would be good to get some whey protein. i know it helps rebuild muscle and it keeps you full. my question is what exactly does it do and when should i take it? i dont lift like huge weights but my muscles always kill me the next day. do i take it before a workout after a workout or as a snack to keep full until my next meal? i am trying to tone my body
