Okay... so I've been craving a dish my mom used to make. Lean steak, brown gravy, sour cream, and wine over noodles. I used to pile my plate high and couldn't get enough. I decided I would satisfy my craving and instead of gravy and sour cream my bf suggested using cream of mushroom soup and we have whole wheat noodles. So I got a smaller plate and started putting noodles on it and my bf suggested I weigh the noodles and check out the serving size. Holy Moly! Serving size is 2 oz and is 180 calories. (have you seen how much 2 oz of noodles is? NOT MUCH) I went ahead and had 4 OZ (still not much) The meal ended up being 656 calories! 360 being just noodles! Sheesh. I don't know what to do... I love this meal but don't have it but once every couple years.

Work it into your calories, or just do a little extra exercise to compensate for the big meal.

Can anyone think of some way I can reduce the calories?

    Shirataki Noodles?

The first time I had them, I wanted to puke. However, I made them in the microwave. A month later I had some that were prepared on a stovetop and they were MUCH better. Which is good, or I might have had to shoot Hungry Girl for her fettuccine recipe.
  • I agree Shirataki noodles are good and a good substitute for pasta. You just need to rinse them out of the package then boil them in water and then re rinse and then put them back on the stove and cook for a little longer and then add sauce or whatever you are going to make with it and they are yummy. Just don't smell them when you first open the package throw them right in a colander to rinse the well to begin with!!

Yeah... noodles are not really a weight loss food. Hate to break it to you.

Why not replace the noodles with a green vegetable? It won't be "just like mom used to make," but it could become a "thin" meal that you can enjoy more often in the future.

Some things are just sinfully high in calories for a reason. I guarantee probably most of our comfort foods from our childhood are not "healthy" or "low calorie". For my mom, her weight loss was starvation, so her meals were made according to my dad, who was a meat and potatoes, starchy kind of guy.

I say, since you don't eat it too often, exercise your little hiney off, then enjoy it the way you remember it. Some memories just shouldn't be tweaked

ususally the 2oz serving size is 2oz (dry- before cooking) and we all know that pasta pretty much doubles in size after it is cooked. So, your 4 oz was probably close to a serving size. :drinker: cheers Does that make you feel better?

The only way I can have noodles (my favourite food) is just plain with sprinkle parmesean cheese on them. I have that for lunch a couple times a week, and it generally ends up being around 400 - 450 calories. :ohwell:

Thankfully, noodles aren't high in much else, except for calories/carbs!

What I do when I eat pasta is fill it out with a bunch of veggies ... that would probably be really yummy with lots of mushrooms, onions, maybe bell peppers, shredded carrots all sauteed with the wine until they're soft or in cooking spray or a dab of olive oil ... anything that adds volume without adding a lot of calories. Sounds yummy!

Yea, I feel like 2oz of dry pasta is plenty when mixed with sauce and meat. I always put marinara and chicken breast in mine. 2 oz of dry pasta makes 1 cup cooked, so I measure it that way. I love pasta and actually eat it pretty frequently because it's easy to make and stays good in the fridge for a while.
