  • I would say so. Tea has 0 cals if it has no sugar added.

Yup, it counts as water. I usually have 2 glasses a day but I only count one.

Tea has a diuretic property, like coffee, so it can actually cause you to need more water.

I usually count unsweetened tea as 1/2 water.

The diuretic properties of tea are a little overstated, to be honest. Make sure you're drinking clear water, but yes, a bit of tea counts too.

I only count water as water. Anything else gets logged in as food.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

And yet it does much the same thing that water does (hydrates).

The view that tea (or other liquids) are somehow not part of our system of hydration is very old fashioned, and not really borne out by any scientific research. Contemporary research suggests counting a cup of tea as one of your 8 glasses is actually absolutely fine.

I go through a lot of Lipton Cold Brew in giant mason jars, and I totally count it towards my water intake. I understand that it's not 100% water, but at the same time it's enough water that I count it IMO.
