MORNING EXERCISE

Hi,
Today, I have started waking up when my hubby does (6.00am) and exercising. I have a 20 month old and a 3 year old and so, other than walking or running around after them, not able to do much exercise in the day. I normally leave it until 10pm when everyone is in bed but then find that I am buzzed and not able to go to sleep.
My question is, does anyone exercise early in the morning and if so, do you eat something to get your energy up? I have only done a warm-up and find that I have a lot less energy than I do in the evening.
Your input would be gratefully received.

If all goes well and I didn't oversleep, I do HIIT (a form of short intense cardio) first thing in the morning before eating. Then I eat about 1 hour later. This is strictly for cardio; I wouldn't do the same for strength training.
Give it a couple of tries. If it feels terribly wrong, then go ahead and have a little something, like a banana, before you start.0 -
I usually eat half a banana before and a bowl of shredded wheat with some nut/fruit topping afterwards.0

I get up at 5 am to work out before going to the office and do not usually eat anything before. The trainer I used to have suggested that you should have something - like a banana or protein drink.0

I actually feel amazing after working out early in the morning and eat after I am done, usually something with some good protein. I've noticed that I do feel hungry but once I eat then I have to wait to work out and then sometimes I just don't feel like working out as hard. So working out before I eat is beneficial to me but everyone is different. But I will say that i will eat right after I exercise like within the next 30 mins afterwards and down at least 1 bottle of water and a multivitamin after I have eaten. This seems to fill me up and gives me energy throughout the day.0

Thank you everyone for the advice.
I have just done some cardio and did feel more energised halfway through, still not quite enough as in the evening. Think I may split it up and do half in the morning and then half in the evening (together with the three mile walk with the boys, as long as the weather stays nice!).
Am going to have a banana soon (hopefully before the boys wake up).
Have a good day everyone and good luck with your weight loss/gain/maintenance journey. :happy:0 -
NEVER train on an empty stomach. If you find you cant eat before then its fine to have your low gi carb meal before you go to bad. It wont upset your hormone levels at night and youll still produce HGH while you sleep.
Only sumos need to train on an empty stomach because of the training they do being so high impact.
One last thing my kinesology lecturer told me : fats are burned in the fire of carbohydrates. If you follow the myth that training on an empty stomach increases the amount of fat burnt, its not true. Your percentage of fat burned will be higher but overall the amount will be a lot less. Last thing you want is to force your body into ketosis.
Hope this helps.0 -
i love doing a good exersice in the morning you feel so invigorated! but just make sure you have something little (ie banana) before at least it will just give you that little boost!0

I get up early to exercise too, but I usually don't leave enough time to have anything to eat, and don't seem to need it (unless I ride more than 30 kms). I just have my normal breakfast afterwards.

I dont really think there is a hard and fast rule with this kind of thing, except that you should listen to your body (not everyone elses lol).
I go to the gym or out for a run at 6am and I have to be back by 7 so my husband can go to work (we have 2 x 4 year olds) and I dont eat until I get home.
I dont have any issues with feeling hungry or any lack of energy. But thats me and what works for me might not work for you.
Maybe try having a few sips of a protein shake before you start working out, or half a banana or something and see how that feels?
There is nothing wrong with splitting up your work outs either.
Would your children leave you alone long enough to do a fitness dvd or do some skipping or something during the day? My guys are all over me if I try to do something like that, but if they have a sleep I could do something.0 -
Thank you!
No, I try doing exercise and my eldest comes along and stands on my feet so they are pinned to the floor lol! Tried soooo many times, have given up now. Also, they don't really sleep in the day. Have tried to stop our 20 month old sleeping in the day as he doesn't at night... so far so good, unless we go for a long walk0
