What Was your First Fitness Class Experience Like?

Ok one of my gyms closed down and now I'm on the hunt for a gym that offers multi locations and classes. I've only done water aroebics so far but I'm really interested in stepping up my game by taking a class or two. Some of the ones that I'm interested in are Zumba, Body Works plus Abs, Cardio Jam.

My concern.... I'll be the only over 40, overweight person in the class and look like a smuck! My gym that closed was for woman and the majority of the woman were around my age so it was comfortable. Now I'm looking at joining LA Fitness and of course I will get a trial membership to see if I even like it but I guess I'm just wondering what other experiences have been.... especially if its a larger, notable healthclub.... and your a woman and you are more than 50 lbs overweight.... also how did you do when you got started?

  • Even though I am not 50lbs overweight (close to 25) my first time taking a fitness class (kickboxing) at my college gym was nerve wrecking! 3 stories of fit people and I had to climb the stairs to get to the 3rd floor! I was out of shape and scared that I was going to be the only girl with a noticeable muffin top hanging over my gym shorts. Trust me, it was a hard class (the trainer was pushing us like crazy and included running!) and I really wanted to leave by 30 minutes into it. But afterwards, I felt good. Nobody said anything to me or gave me weird looks (i hid in the back behind someone who i could follow well). It was an accomplishment I will never forget! :)

So I don't think you have to worry so much. Just pretend that you are as confident as you want to be and try your best. It was scary going into a new place where I knew nobody who could work out with me. But hey, I got through it and am going there regularly now. :) Good luck
  • Ok binky...being the real confident person I was when I first looked at joining a "gym" :noway: I had over 100 pounds to lose. I chose to go where to a fitness center that is also paired with a physical rehab facility. One, I felt I'd fit in better being morbidly obese and over 50 and, secondly, I was certain I was a klutz and having PT and sports medicine folks around was a good thing! They also had a pool that used ultra violet cleaners, reducing the need for chlorine. So I don't have experience with large, chains as I opted out of those here.

The first time I went, I knew I'd make a fool of myself but decided nike was right ...JUST DO IT! I soon realized that no one (who mattered anyway) gave a flip about what I was doing. Oh yeah, there are those that are the mirror hounds, not just to assure good form but cuz they looooooveeeeeee themselves, but mostly people just wanna get their workout in and done. Good luck on your hunt and remember NO ONE could have looked as bad as I did back then in a swim suit!!!
