edited October 2024 in Health and Weight Loss
So I've been steadily losing weight for about 8 months (since January) and I had lost about 35lbs. It was around the 12th that I hit my all time low of 151lbs, but now all of the sudden I've shot back up to 158lbs, which seems to be concentrated around my tummy. I haven't been eating any differently, same stuff as always. Any thoughts on what could be happening?

    Is it your TOM?

If it is the week before or the week of you can retain up to 6pds in water weight. I would give it alittle time and see if it goes away.

Have you stepped up your workout? Maybe it is muscle. Or, if you are pms'ing it could be pure water retention. If it makes you feel any better, I've eaten crap the last few days and am scared out of my wits as to what the scale will register Thur when I weigh in.

Well, my TOM has been totally out of whack all this year because of the birth control that I'm on. I have pretty much had light to heavy spotting every day for months at a time since February. So I suppose that could have something to do with it, but it hasn't had an effect on my weight loss up until now. The only thing is that I actually stopped bleeding for once a couple of days ago. My weight has fluctuated from time to time, but usually only by a couple of pounds. I have definitely not ever gone up by this much in the entire time I've been losing, so it's kind of freaking me out.

O.o Bleeding since Feb? Did you get a IUD?

Oral birth control should regulate your periods not causing spotting.

If it is not TMI what are you currently using?

I have the Implanon. I went back to the doctor in May because of the bleeding, and she put my on the pill for a month hoping that would even things out. It worked for that month and about three weeks after, but since then I've just gone back to bleeding everyday. Until now. I guess it might seem silly, but I have a camping trip in five days and this sudden weight gain has me feeling self conscious like I used to. I'm hoping that I can get this figured out before I go so I can hopefully slim back down, even just a little bit, before I have to be in a bikini for 4 days straight.

I wish you luck with losing the 4 pds!

I would talk to your doctor again if you continue to bleed. Make sure you are taking in alot of iron for the additional blood loss. ^.^
  • It could be many different things....
I know you are on birth control, but is there any chance that it could have failed and you could be pregnanat? That would be an explanation for the weight gain and the bleeding stopping.
    Just a thought.

Sounds like water weight/ bloat. Just keep drinking lots of water. The more water you drink, the less water you retain. Unless of coarse you are a renal patient...

I had similar spotting for a year and had consulted my doctor on several occasions. At the time I was on a pill that had to be taken every day (no break at all), which I was then told to go off for a couple of months. I went off it for three months, the bleeding stopped and the doctor then told me to go back on it. I didn't get to go back on it because I started bleeding again.

After trying several different pills, then getting the contraceptive injection I was still bleeding. I have since went off everything, started eating normally again for a while and it's stopped. FINALLY

A drastic change in diet can cause this to happen, in my case, something I was eating had reacted with the pill, which caused me to bleed.

As for the weight gain, try not to worry too much about it, as it is likely that it will come off as quickly as it went on. It is probably fluid, so make sure you drink plenty of water and don't consume too much sodium
