I have some fresh garden tomatoes and would like to treat myself to a BLT for dinner tonight. Any suggestions for a great bacon where I can get the most bang for the buck, calorie-wise? Thanks!

If I have bacon, I buy my favorite thick cut kind and go all out. None of that thin crappy bacon or "light" bacon- I want the real deal. For the record, my fav is Wellshire Farm Black Forest Bacon.
  • Bacon has very low calories and will keep you full quickly, so eating a few slices can go a long way. I would pick up some nitrate free stuff. I buy Hormel All Natural. It tastes a lot "cleaner" than other bacon, and you don't get the bad nitrates. Have fun!

Bacon is not that high in calories..............

Focus more on getting some farm fresh slab bacon or some nitrate free, natural bacon.

What kind of miracle bacon do you eat that is not high in calories? And if you dont think bacon is high in calories, then what is?

100 g of bacon equals 450 kcal. For that amount you can eat 4,5 eggs, 4 bananas, or 2 pounds of carrot.
  • I lIke to bake my bacon instead of pan frying. It keeps it out of the drippings and the strips don't curl up.

I put a cooling rack inside a cookie sheet with an edge. Put the bacon in a cold oven. Turn the oven on to 375 and bake until it's as crispy as you like.

Who eats 100 g of bacon? One slice is about 15 g. Two slices is usually about 140 - 160 calories...same as 2 eggs.

100 grams of bacon is roughly a quarter pound of bacon? Who eats that much in one sitting. it usually takes 3-4 good slices for a BLT and since I don't eat bread I wrap mine in lettuce so 2 slices per lettuce wrap.........may make 2 lettuce wraps so 4 slices of bacon total.

In one slice cooked there are:

41-46 calories in one bacon strip of medium/average thickness (about 0.3oz or 9g)
61 calories in one thicker bacon strip (about 0.4oz or 11g)

Oscar Meyer Center Cut Bacon is the best I have found. 3 slices for 70 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, and 7 grams of protein. It can be a bit pricey, so I usually stock up when it is on sale. It is normally 6.99 for a package, but I can find it on sale usually for $5.00.

It's really worth it though, and I usually just use one slice on like a breakfast sandwich or something of that sort.

It's Friday night and my daughter and I are headed out to the Farmer's Market to get some veggies and the best bacon I've ever eaten. I grew up prefering ham steaks to bacon, turns out that I was malnourished and almost never got the healthy fats/proteins I needed for my brain/body/muscles. In my culture, people were more likely to give me enough protein as a child, if I requested the ham. My parents were both in the medical field, applied the best of what they were taught but the common nutritional wisdom was not, at least for me, nutritious.

I've come to treasure bacon over the last 5 months, especially from pigs who are pastured. Eating bacon, etc, from pigs that eat no grain makes my body build muscle and burn excess fat for fuel. It has also lowered my blood pressure and cholesterol.

When my annual labs come in the mail, in September, I'm planning to post a 'Body by Bacon' thread for those who would like the medical metrics on how a morbidly obese woman became an athlete with the help of a Paleo/Primal lifeplan including bacon.

I get Giant Eagle Natures Basket natural uncured bacon. No nitrates, hormones or any crap and is about 45kcal pre slice. I typically eat 6 slices.

Lots of people have great things to say about center cut bacon.

I usually eat natural turkey bacon, but for a BLT... go for hog bacon. Just fricken do it.

Look for a center cut bacon. Oscar Meyer makes a center cut bacon and a few store brands do too. The Oscar Meyer center cut one is 70 calories for three slices.

Bacon is not that bad if you have only 1 serving. You can also get the bacon pieces that are by the salad dressings which could save calories. It is just enough to give you the bacon flavor you desire.

I have Great Value's thick cut peppered bacon. Don't know about bang for the caloric buck, but it tastes WONDERFUL on a BLT or chicken, cheese, and bacon melt. In fact, that's what I'm having tonight!

Who eats a quarter pound of bacon? A quarter pound of anything isn't very much. Thats like asking who eats a 4 oz. steak (aka quarter pound of beef)??? Of course you can eat a quarter pound of bacon, I could do that before I even realized what I was doing.
And if it is a quarter pound of bacon that is before it is cooked. Bacon loses tons of size when it is cooked so a "quarter pound" of bacon is really more like an eighth of a pound. Not much at all.

Who eats that much bacon at once? That's almost a quarter pound of bacon! I have 2 or 3 slices of thick cut peppered bacon on a sandwich, and that's 90-135 calories. A perfectly acceptable number in my world and my diet.

A quarter pound of something you usually use in far small amounts is a lot. Try eating a quarter pound of saltine crackers....tell me it's not very much....go on.

Ok? That was a horrible example. Saltines? I used a good example that actually fits. 4 oz. of steak is a quarter pound. Try to go eat that. Actually go eat that in about 3 bites. Because thats all it would take. Don't try to compare crackers with meat. And as I said before a quarter pound of bacon is pre cooked. Bacon shrivels up and loses so much weight when it is cooked that it weighs half after cooking.

I wouldn't say people use bacon in small amounts usually, you usually get 4 or 5 pieces of bacon.
