Sneakers

Hello, I apologize in advance if this isn't the best section to post my question but it seemed logical.
I am looking for your opinions on sneakers! I know the "best" kind varies from person to person but I am hoping to at least get some ideas on how to find a great pair.
I am doing a lot of walking as a core part of my workout. I much prefer to walk outdoors (vs. treadmill) and I live in New England, which is very rocky and irregular terrain. I've been doing at least 4 miles each time and it feels great... I'm getting exercise, fresh air, and tearing through audiobooks on my iPod so I'm combining two favorite pasttimes. I am trying to hit 300 miles before January 1st 2012 as a mini challenge to myself. I am also on my feet all day at work on an unforgiving hard wood floor. I have always had high arches, and my feet are very small which means finding my size can be a hassle. I never wear high heels, so no complications from that.
I got a new pair of sneakers before I started and I despise them. They were a good buy at an outlet store and I liked how they looked (stupid stupid stupid!!!), so I went ahead and bought them. Wearing them for more than an hour of activity results in shin splints and horrible heel pain. I bought some heel inserts and added them, which makes the sneakers tolerable for work but still far from ideal during workouts. I know a certain amount of soreness is to be expected with exercise, but I can tell that these are not supportive shoes and will do more damage than good in the long run.
What are your favorite sneakers? How did you find them? What do you like about them? Any advice will be MUCH appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I bought a pair of Dr. Scholl's sneakers, at Wal Mart. They were 35 dollars I think. I love them. They have the gel insoles in them already, really helps with my shins, knees and back.

Go to a an "Outdoors" store like REI. Then get fitted correctly. The one we go to even has an artificial rock in the shoe area to see how it would feel climbing in them.

I was where you are a few weeks back. It depends on how fast you're going too (i.e. are you strolling or power walking) but a good general tip is that if you're giving it loads, a decent pair of running shoes will do the job. BTW, I did 50 miles in a week on mine, with no feet issues whatsoever. Luck!
