The way that I started was by paying attention to packages, their portions, and calories per portion. The more that I started to understand what kind of food my favorite foods were, the more that what I ate changed. I would be so frustreated that I wanted that Whopper, but I could not share the calories. I have jsut had to find healthier alternatives for the things that I love. For instance a turkey burger instead of a hamburger. I also changed to eating more consistently. I now eat every 2 to 3 hours and have increased my water intake. It is easy the have an apple or some almonds as a snack and they keep me going until my next meal.
My doctor even said I can still have the whooper or what ever I am craving as long as it is not a daily thing and that I don't over induldge.
I hope that helps.... Just pay attention to what you are eating, how much, and increasing your water intake.

Many ways to do that. Add me as a friend a we can talk about it. Would need to know your current habit to make the best suggestions. Everybody is different, there are many ways to do it.
Cooking at home is one of the most obvious one! Lots of salt, sugar and fat in process food...0 -
My suggestion is to eat what you like and work on portion control first. As you pay attention to what's in the food you're eating with the help of this website, you'll sort out what to keep eating and what's not worth it. lol
One of the hardest lessons I had to learn was how much to eat. I can remember eating a family serving of breadsticks, half a pizza, some chicken wings, and still having some ice cream for dessert. I was never full even when I had eaten to the point I was sick. I learned I was never full because there was no nutritional value in the food I was eating...
The next question is what are you trying to accomplish? Eating healthful foods means different things to different people based on their goals.
One of my motivators is reducing my risk for cancer, so I looked up foods that would help do that and have been trying to incorporate more of them into my diet. Most of what I read stressed broccoli, dark and leafy greens, whole grain, and a reduction in processed meat and animal fats, so that's where I started. I ditched my french fries for broccoli, I prefer a spinach salad, and I'm working to phase out more of the pork products I eat. I don't eat much beef, so I don't worry about what little I do. I've also started working on reducing the amount of chicken I eat in favor of beans for my protein.0 -

I just try and follow a balanced diet and not eat too much junk. But if you're used to junk, you'll have to wean yourself off it or temptation might catch you unawares :noway:
Now, I am a chocholic and I did go cold-turkey, but only because I was on a pledge to cut out sweets for 8 weeks. This is what has kick-started my new diet and nutrition plan... oh and finding MFP and how easy it is to count the calories and keep everything on track.
I don't do fads and I don't do supplements... that's just my personal thing. None of the diet's I've ever followed worked in the long run and in fact I hate the word DIET being used to describe a weight-loss plan.
I try and eat a berakfast with some protein as it's been suggested that it keeps you feeling fuller for longer than just compex carbs like oatmeal or wholegrains.
I've certainly upped my fruit and veg count considerably as you can eat a larger portion and thus resist the tempation to snack. Also, snacks are now apples and grapes or a stick of celery. This from a man who could wolf down a sleeve of Jaffa Cakes and not blink between cakes
I still use butter in my cooking, but now keep it to a reasonable amount rather than just let myself get carried away. No foods a sin, but if I want to have a curry, I'll put 100g of rice in a small bowl and then spoon 100g of curry, mostly meat and veg and not so generous on the sauce as I used to be I used to eat a huge bowl of curry with 2 mini naans, now I eat a half a mini naan.
I still enjoy a drink. Cider is my poison and I also enjoy a glass or few of wine. These all count, but spread over a week, it's not too bad :drinker:
Oh and one brillant tip.... use smaller plates! You'll put more food on a 12" plate than an 8" plate and if you were to put the same amounts on the larger plate, you'll think you're being short-changed. It's amazing how smaller portions can be just as filling. Soon, you'll start to eat sensibly and your body will tell you when you've had enough and it's time to stop.
Hope this helps. I'm sure you'll get 101 messages with all sorts of different opinions and advice. Just make sure you do what's best for you. Good luck!0
