Any capoeira experts out there?

I'm seriously considering taking the art up for fitness, and also for a modelling role coming up in April 2012 which requires the ability to execute capoeira poses. What can you tell me about it, for example, the type of fitness it advocates, benefits, risks, how it affects calorie burning and metabolism?

Many thanks!

My friends in London are going to Capoeira classes and are loving them!!
I just began some research myself. Maybe this link'll help: http://thecapoeirablog.wordpress.com/2007/08/13/why-should-you-learn-capoeira/
  • I'm no expert but I've been doing capoeira for about 6 months now. I absolutely love it and I definitely see and feel the effects on my body. I wasn't really watching my weight so I cant tell you how much I've actually lost but I can say that I have noticed a difference, and I'm more toned than before I started. Aside from that, I'm fitter than I was and it's incredibly energising.

You also enter a whole new community which is great to keep you going. The people who practise end up like a family and you make some great friends. I'd definitely recommend it if you haven't already started (I know, this reply is a bit late...)

I signed up for a capoeira class in January! Uhoh!!
I would love to hear more about your experience. Do they really start for beginners? How is the progression? Do you practice a lot? How big are the groups? Oh so many questions....
I always wanted to try it but never even dared to look into it.
