calorie discrepency

As I was logging my food last night I scanned in the bar code with my phone, but when I looked at the package it listed a different amount of calories. I went with the higher number, but was wondering if anyone in the food industry (or anyone) know if the packaging labels, or the bar codes are more up to date?
