Hi all,

Has anyone else found that the 30ds is giving them knee troubles? I've done level 1 for 6 out of the last 8 days and found that whilst out for my walk today my left knee started twinging. My housemate who has done it for 3 days reported that his knees had gone off too. Is this common?

Thanks.

  • I did the full 30DS and haven't done it in months and I still have trouble with my knees. I never had any trouble before. Protect your knees, be careful with lunges.

Yep, it gave me knee problems. I did a whole month but had to modify some moves so I didn't have to bend too much. Not sure why it bothered my knee so much. I can run & do pilates or yoga and my knees don't bother me. It got to where I had to skip a few days because it hurt to walk.

    * just to add I did check my form & everything - I was doing it right so I don't know

I have joint problems but I seem to be ok with 30DS. You really must make sure that your knees do not go forward when doing squats and lunges. Perhaps do the easier version with Anita for a week or two, once your knee is up to it. You might just need to strengthen your leg muscles a bit so your knees are better supported

My left knee has been a problem for a long time but with just walking It seemed to get better. I am on Day 6 of 30 DS and the knee is acting up again. I am going to keep it low impact and see what happens, no jumping jacks or running and see what happens.

My knees only bother me during the jump rope piece so I do marching instead. I am on Day 9 of Level 1- and it still seems hard.

30DS is def. hard on the knees. when i first started i used a knee brace and then once my knees got stronger i was able to take it off. i don't have any issues now.

    goodluck!!

Yes, never had a single problem with knees before but while doing level 3 I got a sudden twinge behind my kneecap. I knew it wasn't a muscle pain so I stopped immediately in case I was actually doing damage. Never having had any knee pain I looked up my symptoms on the net and the closest match is runner's knee. Upon further investigation I discovered several sets of exercises that you can do to strengthen the muscles around the knee. I also found some exercises to strengthen hip muscles because apparently weak hips can cause problems at knees and ankles. Youtube has some good demo videos and the runner's world website has useful info too. I'm doing these exercises twice a day for a couple of weeks before I try the 30DS again.

I found some tests that helps you determine if your hip muscles need strengthening (can't remember where I got it otherwise I'd credit the source):

    Test: Do a one-legged squat
Verdict: If your knees collapse inward your hips are probably weak.

Test: Stand with your right foot on a step, the left dangling in the air, your hands on your hips. Slowly raise your left hip up and release it back down.
Verdict: If you can't do 2 sets of 10 reps without holding onto a wall for balance, your hip muscles are weak.

Test: Sit on the edge of a bench and lie back. Pull your right leg in to your chest; let your left leg hang down.
Verdict: If your left thigh lifts off the bench your hips are tight.

    Hope this helps.
  • My girlfriend and I both have problems with our knees on the lunge exercises, especially the pendulum lunges in Phase 2.
