An NSV that wasn't (somewhat funny story)
Yesterday was one of my co-worker's birthday and, as is typical, we had cake to celebrate. I decided in advance that I was going to skip the cake and have a protein drink instead. When I went into the celebration room and saw the chocolate cake, I knew it would be easy to pass on the cake as I'm not as fond of chocolate cake (with chocolate icing) as I am of vanilla cake. So I had no temptation for the cake. However, there were also some cookies from our copy service rep. He brings Otis Spunkmeyer cookies with each delivery and he knew my co-worker loved the cookies so he brought some extra for her birthday. I figured ONE RELATIVELY SMALL COOKIE would be okay. After I ate it, I said "hmmm...wonder how many calories that was". Someone answered "I think its 350 calories". I said "no frickin' way....its one small cookie". Well, I looked it up on MFP and, sure enough, it was 360 calories (it was a white chocolate chip with cranberry cookie).
360 calories for one small cookie!!!!
until that moment I thought I had an NSV passing on the birthday cake. However, I might have been better off with a small piece of cake. LOL!
even with the cookie calories recorded, I still ate my normal allotment the rest of the day. I finished 380 calories over my daily goal, which I can live with. Its just funny to think that one small cookie has that many calories packed into it.
Anyone else ever eat something that contained way more calories than you would have ever guessed it contained?

Yes! After I ran a race one Saturday I thought, I will treat myself to this chocolate muffin.. I had in my mind that it was about 400 calories, which I could live with for that day. Went home and checked it on MFP and it was a whopping 750 calories!!! I felt awful the rest of the day and of course went over my calories! It is so crazy to think that that many calories can come in such a small package!!
I'm proud of you for skipping on the cake!! And it's better that you're more aware and passing it along to others!!!0 -
I went to Perkins for father's day with DH and father. I got the Potato pancakes (5) thinking 'better than regular pancakes'...came home looked up the total (from the Perkins website) and was SHOCKED that the meal (3bacon, applesauce and 5 med potato pancakes) was 1100 calories!!!!!!!!!!!! I had vegetables the rest of the day....:( boy was I surprized!!
also, I'm uninformed...what is NSV?? I know what BLT's are (bites, licks, tidbits)...0 -
Many times. I never would have guessed one of those cookies had 350 calories. Maybe 200, but wow. I had a salad at Houlihans with no dressing a few weeks back and once I figured it out, I had consumed 780 calories. It would've been over 1000 with the dressing. I don't trust the restaurant websites for nutritional info because the portions they serve compared to what they count calories for are hugely different.0

Otis Spunkmeyer stuff is the worst. The cafeteria here sells their muffins, which I used to walk past every day, and so one day I gave in and had one. I had to go to the Otis Spunkmeyer website to find out that one muffin had 480 calories in it. 480!
Good job with sticking with your plan for the rest of the day, too. It's easy to let one slip-up lead to a long slide.0 -
I had three cups of free trail mix before I checked the calorie count later. I count remember the exact amount, but it seems to me it was over 1500 calories.0

Yes. A ribeye steak at O'Charleys that was a whopping 850 calories! Well....I ended up only eating half after I went to log it and found out the calorie content. Oh, and the 400 calorie ranch dressing!!!0
