Not sure where to post this: But I may have a hernia I am going to the doctor soon, but what does this mean in terms of me loosing weight? Is recovery going to keep me from exercising?

It depends on the hernia. My mom had one from a surgery that she had operated on, my dad's best friend had one that had to be operated on, and my dad currently has one that he isn't getting operated on for. You'll have to see what the doctor says about it.
But if you do need surgery you will need to take it easy while you recover. Diet-wise nothing should really change though, so you should still lose weight if you can't exercise for a while.0 -
I had an umbilical hernia repair last summer. You need to be extra careful during recovery not to lift too much or strain those muscles or you could cause it to rupture. Walking, however, is usually a very safe exercise. They told me I could be walking as much as I wanted right after surgery Personallly, I didn't feel up to it for a few weeks afterwards, but then I was able to work back up to where I had been before surgery. You do regress a little, but your body will bounce back.0

I have an umbilical hernia. I am not planning surgery for another six months or more. I have done mostly cardiovascular. Weight lifting I only do light weights. It has not stopped me:)0

Thank you for some input, I think it might be umbilical, it's right there!0

I had a hiatal hernia which is located right where your diaphragm enters your stomach. After surgery, I was allowed to walk, but I was not allowed to do any other training at all for at least 8 weeks. Walking is good though.
Good luck!0 -
I had an inguinal hernia- apparently rare in women but they do happen. I had surgery and was told not to lift anything heavier then 15 lbs for 6 weeks. I was told that I could walk and run as much as I wanted during that time, I started the P90x 14 weeks post op and 5 weeks in I apparently ripped the internal stitches apart. I had to have a second surgery and was restricted for 1 year to not lift more then 15 lbs and no heavy abdominal exercises. I could run though- and that is what I have been doing.
BE CAREFUL! Let yourself heal and make sure that you ease back into any type of abdominal exercise program and lifting program.0 -
Good to know I'll be able to walk at least, I am a mother of two and one of them is 4 months!!0

About six months after I had my second boy (who weighed 10.7lbs.) I had my gallbladder removed. During the surgery they discovered that I had an embelical hurnia. I had never thought anything of the bulging bellybutton 'cause it just looked like pregnancy belly button. Anway, the thing ruptured somehow about a month later (which is crazy because I didn't lift anything!) I went back to see the doctor reguarding the pain in my upper abdomen. He told me, "It's just fat." A few months later it was obvious that it was my hernia that had reaccured. It's been over a year and my new surgion told me that I should lose weight before I have my next surgery. But this genious didn't even give me any input as to how I am supposed to do that if I can't lift weights the way I am supposed to. Soooo, that is one of the reasons I signed up for myfitnesspal. To keep a close eye on my calorie intake so I can do just that. I know I can't lift how I would like to but I am sticking to the tread mill, the eliptical trainer, and just taking walks with the fam.0
