My first snow shoeing adventure

Options
I am so pumped up!!

I just completed my first snow shoeing ever. I bundled up and braved the cold, put on my new snow shoes and grabbed my new poles and away I went for over 40 minutes. I use to cross country ski but had to give that up because of physical limitations. I had sooooooooo much fun on my snow shoes and cannot wait to go again. A greater bonus was when I checked to see how many calories I burned!!!

If anybody has any tips about snow shoeing I would love to hear them!

I'm snowshoeing in the Laurentians on my profile pic
I love snowshoeing. I woud suggest to limit using the poles at first, they can actually be very tiring. I also suggest to start slow, because you are going to be using muscles you didn't even know you had!
I also do some running in my snowshoes...it burns A LOT more calories than straight running, it is pretty challenging... a little run/walk adventure in snowshoes can be fun.

    Hi samsona

Thanks for the snow shoeing tips. I will have to try running as I progress along further in my snowshoeing attempts. Your photo is great. I went for over the 40 minutes and it was quite a workout. It was so invigorating that I wanted to do more but I thought I better take it easy the first time!! What a great exercise especially in the new powdery snow.

    Hi amunet07

I highly recommend snow shoeing and cannot wait to go again. I was lucky that I got my snow shoes on sale last week and my hubby showed me how to use them. They are the new aluminum kind and really easy to walk in. Boy what a good workout it was. Have fun trying them!!!

My hubby and I got into it last year. We had record snow falls in Wisconsin and found it fun and a great way to get fresh air too. I went yesterday and wore my hrm and in 60 minutes I burned over 500 calories. it is awesome! We walk on a golf course oddly enough but the hills make it a great work out. Best advice is to invest in some good snow pants! Have fun.

I received my snowshoes last year for Christmas, and went out the first time for a 60 minute walk (over hill and dale) and the next day I could hardly move. lol This year I am going at it much slower. I had a great little walk today in the snow. It was beautiful out. I use poles because they keep me much more stable than walking without them. I also think it gives you a little more of an upper body workout. I don't have snow pants but I do think they would be an addition though if you fall alot. I use gaiters that are waterproof leg coverings that go to my knees and seem to do fine with those. I think the only thing I would do differently would be to find a vented coat. That is one that has zippers built into it that when open allow more air flow so you don't sweat. Enjoy the winter, I do much more that I can get around in it.
