Want to lift heavy but..

I have two dodgy knees and afraid that it will make them worse. I have been to see a specialst and they said that i shouldnt really squat or lunge for that matter.
Instead of when bending my knees the caps go up and down, mine go from side to side, so I have been given exercises to make my inside of my knees stronger, to build up the muscle.
I really want to start heaving lifting but am afraid to. Has anybody got any advice?
thanks.

Ask these questions to your doctor. He really knows best. Let him know that you understand he doesn't want you squatting/lunging too much, but tell him you would like to lift weights and strength train and see what he says.0

Yeah will do, I have to go to a physio appointment in the next few weeks for them to show me how to strap them up so will ask then. Just wondering whether anybody had the same experiences thats all.
Thanks.0 -
The physio will be your best help I think. Doctors are pretty good at saying "don't do that" and giving out pills.
A good physio should work you through a programme that will get you to where you want to be.0 -
I had a similar problem at one time. Years of lunges and squats took care of that.0

Same here. You just have to slowly build strength. Just take it slow and easy0 -

You went to a specialist who gave you sound medical advice, you'd be wise to listen to them. I had this same problem as a teenager, with time and physical therapy I was able to stregthen the correct muscles to correct my knee tracking and now I'm lifting heavy. Get into physical therapy and work with them and be patient.0 -
You can't do squats or lunges but what about leg lift for quads and hamstrings, leg presses, and calf raises? I would think your knees would be more stable during those moves than the others (where all your body weight is on them.)0
