sugar intake

I was just curious on people's views or opinions on sugar. I haven't been tracking it on my diary because I'm more worried about other things, like sodium since I have BP issues. I checked my sugar intake today, just outta curiosity, and have realized I'm probably ALWAYS over what MFP says I should have a day. I don't eat a lot of what could be considered sweets, although I'm not perfect everyday (shocking, I know!). My 8oz serving of skim milk and a medium banana alone this morning just about took care of the daily allowance MFP gave me. Add some Quaker mini rice Quakes (8g sugar a serving) and now I'm over for the day and it's only 920am here! I believe my allowance was 26g, that's about 2 servings of fruit and considering a healthy diet should be at least that much fruit a day, are MFP's levels just low? Are they really only considering simple sugars from sweets and breads?
Also, my friends list is still a little light (all puns taken into consideration) I would love more friends and support and have much support to offer!

I always go over.... ALWAYS! But Sugar has become my #1 watched item... Ive noticed the trimming it down has made me loose. I keep it under 40 (although MFP says 26-32) I try to only get natural sugars, and if I go over due to fruit, I am OK with that.0

I've noticed the same and as long as all the rest of the measures are around the target I don't worry too much about it.0

I always seem to be over in sugar too.... along with Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Shoot... eating 1/2 grapefruit for breakfast puts me up their in the sugar and Vitamin C category... and add my daily AM yogurt.... close to the goal.
While I try to really monitor those items, I don't fret too much if my numbers are high due to fruits and vegetables.... or 1 or 2 yogurts a day. Now... if I were eating cookies, ice-cream or a lot more processed foods, then I make adjustments.0 -
ALWAYS eat under what it says. I watch my sugar intake like a hawk and really try to limit it to the natural sugars in fruit. If I dont I will get sugar spikes which will make me crave more sugar. I have found keeping it low and even really helps eliminate sweet cravings.0

sugars is a hard thing to get a handle on. At least I think it is. MFP has a pretty low target for me, so I pay more attention to the type/source of the sugar rather than the actual amount of sugar. If I'm over because I drink a lot of milk and have some fruit, then I'm good with that. If I'm over because I had chocolate cake for dinner, then that's not so good.0

I hesitate to respond to this because I usually get attacked when I do but here goes. I believe (based upon my own research on the topic of sugar intake and metabolism) that when trying to loose weight that carb intake is the number one thing to track. Part of that is reducing/eliminating as much sugar as YOUR body requires for YOU to get lean.
For instance, I'm diabetic. For me to get lean (or just survive without serious complications) I have to severely restrict my sugar intake. Other people might not have to as much. Some might have to even more than I. It really is an individual thing. That being said, any sugar, from any source will raise your insulin level and cause you to store fat. So whether you are eating sugar straight from the sugar jar, an apple, a potato, corn, anything it is going to have an impact on your insulin level. The amount of insulin required to handle the sugar in your blood along with your individual insulin resistance/acceptance will determine how much sugar gets stored as triglycerides (fat) and how much gets used as fuel.
Either way if you are burning the glucose as fuel from your diet you aren't burning the amino acids for fuel that your fat cells are holding. If you are eating too much sugar you are causing your fat cells to hold more triglycerides.
My opinion is that you should replace simple carbs with protein and fat. Replace fruit with veggies, and this will lower your sugar intake and you will get leaner.
Please be gentle when attacking me, I'm having a bad day already.0 -
I honestly don't track my sugar in take. I am using the Diet Solution Plan, which tells me how many units of protein, carbs and fats to eat at each meal/snack. I know that if I stay within those guidelines then my sugar intake will be fine. I also don't eat processed foods at home, so that cuts sugars out as well.
About the only "extra" sugar I consume is in my coffee. I drink a cup of coffee 3x to 4x a week, and i put 2 to 3 tsp of sugar in it, along with a nice dollup of half and half or milk (the fat helps slow the sugar absorption so my blood sugar doesn't go wonky on me). I don't track my food on MFP, I acutally have a Bodybugg so I use their online tool, but I don't pay attention to sugar over there either.
I personally am more concerned with staying below sodium (which is easy to do without eating boxed food or fast food), and with making sure I stay at my calorie goals.

I liked your response. Why on earth would anyone attack you for that? But I guess it happens here, sometimes, right? I agree with you, by the way.
And I'm sorry you're having a rough day. Will say a special prayer for you.

What... what???? you're saying people should listen to and know their body??? that's absurd! Everyone knows dieting and healthy is a cookie cutter operation where all you need to do is take the latest and greatest diet pill and eat special K for 2 of your 3 meals.
*sarcasm off*
I think this is very sound advice. Always good to hear from someone who has done the research and knows what they are talking about.0 -
